In the late 1800s and early 1900s, air forces were first deployed to support artillery in wars. This was followed by deployment of air forces during World War I as part of the American Expeditionary Force. The Denver-based National Guard also saw service in World War I as part of the Colorado National Guard. The United States Air Force (USAF) was activated on September 15, 1947, and served in a variety of roles through most of the Cold War. In 1991, when the USAF merged with NATO to form NATO Command Europe, Grand Junction’s airport became one of its command locations. From 1992 until 2003, Grand Junction was home to two major USAF bases: Whiteman AFB and Hill AFB. Today, Grand Junction is a center for aeronautics research and development at Whiteman AFB while Hill AFB serves as an operations base for US Airways Airlines’ national airspace system operations.

Grand Junction, Colorado is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1875 by Anglo-American settlers and named for General James H. Grandison, who led Ulysses S. Grant's army in the Mexican–American War. The first store was built on what is now Main Street and it was called the "Green Mill". The first post office opened in 1876 and was called "Belle Creek." In 1886, the Post Office changed its name to "Grand Junction" after James H. Grandison achieved national prominence as a general during the American Civil War. In 1902, a millrace (now known as Belle Creek) ran through the town and provided water for many homes; today it remains a popular spot for swimming and fishing near downtown Grand Junction. A dam across Belle Creek also created Lake Erie around which much of the later city of Grand Junction developed. In 1912, Grand Junction became an incorporated municipality with its own government; it remained that way until 1959 when it merged intoDenver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Today, downtownGrandJunction retains much of its original architecture from early 21st century grandeur – such as City Hall (1913), First National Bank Building (1920), Masonic Temple (1894), and Roman Catholic church – while adding contemporary features like Applebees restaurant on Park Boulevard and Kenworth truck dealership on I-25 just south of downtown

Grand Junction is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grand Junction was founded in 1868 and made a city in 1903. The first post office at Grand Junction was established on December 12, 1868, by George H. Stephenson with the name of "Hartford". The original location for the post office was off of North Main Street near what is now South Broadway. The town's first store opened in 1870 and it became known as "The Hartman Store". In 1875, Chas Sibley donated land to make into a city limits and Grand Junction became an official city on January 1, 1903. In 1909, General Electric began construction of its new plant in Grand Junction which would later be renamed GEICO Park after the company's founder James Fenton (1836–1912). The park has been home to various events throughout its history such as the 1984 Winter Olympics and numerous rock concerts over the years. On November 17th, 2006 Colorado Statehood Day, Governor John Hickenlooper dedicated both downtowns located across from each other - City Hall Plaza on East First Avenue and GEICO Park - within minutes of each other as part of a celebration that also included speeches by Mayor John Suthers and US Senator Cory Gardner As one half of an increasingly metropolitan area experiencing rapid growth since 2000 due to development along I-25 corridor including Aurora/Denver/Lakewood) Grande Junction remains prominently visible while overshadowed by these areas collectively through less access to quality public education both locally & regionally thru lack thereof Chinook Elementary School closed District 15 El Paso Intermediate School consolidated Chinook into District 16 Monitor Middle School closed Stewart Intermediate School combined with Ysleta High School so there are presently no junior high or middle school students attending any public school servicing grades 7-8 K-12
