The current mayor is Ruben Castillo and the current city councilmember is Republican Arturo Vargas. In 1868, prospectors discovered gold in what would become Durango. In 1870, the first post office was established in what would become Durango. In 1872, the first store opened in Durango. A railroad was built through Durango in 1880 and it became an important transportation hub for the region. By 1904, there were over 100 businesses in downtown Durango! In 1914, when World War I began, many of the mills closed because of lack of demand from war-related items such as munitions and shoes! However, most of these mills were reopened after 1919 when Denver became an official city! After World War I ended, a number of soldiers returned to Durango to work on new structures and businesses that had been started up during the war or were newly founded! One example of this was The John Deere Company which moved into its present building on Main Street in 1924! Postwar growth continued with new construction until 1949 when it reached its peak with more than 400 businesses!! In 1957, durangopueblos gathered together to form their own government; this event signaled beginnings to a period where economic development would take center stage!! Businesses grew rapidly as migrants streamed into town looking for opportunities; by 1979 there were over 1,500 businesses!!! In 1984-1985 durangopueblos held referendum seeking incorporation into a larger municipality; this result indicated overwhelming support for incorporation!!!!! Mayor Castillo announced plans to annex all but one bedroom community within our borders!!! This annexation process took 3 years and resulted in the creation of Aurora (which now shares boundaries with La Plata)!!!! On July 1st 1990 City Council voted 6-1 against annexing neighboring communities due to several concerns raised about their potential impact on business operations!!! Despite these challenges City Council decided not to dissolve itself but instead continue working collaboratively with other municipalities within San Miguel County!!!
Durango, Colorado was first settled in 1847 by the Mexican population. The town developed slowly due to its remote location and lack of resources. In the 1860s, Durango became a stop on the Denver-Aurora Railroad. This railroad allowed for more people to move into the small community and it grew rapidly. By 1870, Durango had a population of around 1,000 people and it began to become known as a manufacturing center for goods exported to Mexico. In 1915, Durango was named one of forty towns in Colorado that were designated as " Urban Centers." This designation helped promote economic development within the town and helped increase its population by 20%. In 1937, durango suffered from two major earthquakes which destroyed many buildings and killed many people. These Earthquakes also gave rise to the name "The Stringtown" because so many families lost their homes in the collapsed buildings. However, this nickname has been largely forgotten over time and today no trace remains of The Stringtowns heyday.
