It is the county seat for San Miguel County and has a municipal government. The name "Durango" comes from the Churcahua Apache name "Duro-gá." In 1871, Durango became an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of Pueblo County. The first post office was established in 1872 and remained in operation until 1907. During that time, it served as both the primary shipping point on the Arkansas River for goods coming out of Mexico and also as a center for cattleraising and mining operations. By 1907, when Pueblo County merged with Colorado to form Larimer County, Durango had become an unincorporated community within Larimer County. With its strong automotive industry (primarily automobiles) and heavy reliance on agriculture throughout most of its history, Durango has often been considered one of rural America's poorest cities. However, recent economic development has made it one of the fastest-growing communities in Rocky Mountain Region. The city began life as a trading post on Hwy 14 between Gallup and Trinidad where wagon trains traveling westward stopped en route to Los Angeles during their winter travels in 1867-68. A schoolhouse was erected at this location in 1870 before being moved to what is now downtown Durango two years later when Interstate 25 was completed bypassing that town altogether. At this time there were only about 50 residents living within town limits while outside merchants enjoyed free access to trade goods they brought overland from Mexico City or Denver through Hwy 14 across Indian Territory south of Gallup Gulch (now Ouray). In 1875 Kirtland Peak , located east of present day Durango on Ute Mesa National Monument property (), erupted producing extensive damage to nearby towns including Gallup which lost 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) along its entire length!
