The United States Air Force has a long and proud history in Durango, Colorado. The USAF is responsible for providing air support to the local community and contributing to the region's economy. The USAF began operations in World War II as part of the Army Service Forces. In 1947, the USAF was created when President Harry S Truman merged the Air Force and Marine Corps. The USAF operates throughout North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and South Africa. It is one of the most important military forces in our country and its members play an essential role in supporting our national security. Durango, Colorado is a small town in the San Miguel County seat of Durango. The population was 3,898 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Arkansas River about 20 miles south of downtown Durango and about 26 miles east of Lake Havasu City. The first European to visit Durango was Francisco Vasquez in 1519, but it wasn't until 1879 that a wagon train led by Kit Carson arrived with gold prospects. In 1881, John Wesley Powell discovered and named the Arkansas River after General James H. Wilson who had led the United States forces against Mexico in 1846-1847. A railroad was built through Durango in 1903 which made it an important center for trade with surrounding counties. In 1916, during World War I, much of the eastern half of Colorado came under occupation by German forces as part of their effort to conquer all Western America. On 4 October 1916, Private First Class George Fenton Jorgensen from Company C2/1st Battalion (7th Infantry) USMC served his country during World War I while wearing civilian clothes as he volunteered to deliver food and water to military units operating in Utah and Arizona Territory. He became known as "the Milkman" because he delivered more than 10 tons per day into German lines near Tucson before finally surrendering on 8 November 1916 when ordered back home by his commanding officer at Fort Riley, Kansas on account of his dangerous task! In 1934 local entrepreneur LaVerne Kapp founded what would become one of the largest retailers in southern Colorado – Big Red Drug Store – within city limits today. The store continued operations until 1993 when it closed its doors for good after over 50 years serving customers from both inside and outside city limits! The store's large white pillars still stand today as a reminder of Big Red Drug Store's long history in Durango!

Over time, this tradition grew into something more personal, with members giving Gifts of Service (GOS) to others in return for favors or positive attention. GOS have become an important part of USAF culture and provide a unique opportunity for individuals within the organization to show their support for its mission while also demonstrating appreciation for those who serve alongside them. Today, there are several types of GOS available fromwithin the USAF: presentation gos, thank-you gos, Christmas present gos, and award ceremonies gos. Each type offers its own unique perspective on how Squadron commanders can show gratitude for all that they do while also honoring those who have contributeeto Squadron’s successstories. Presentation gos can be delivered at squadron reunions or special events, thank-you gos can be sent out after wins or losses during wars or conflicts, and Christmas presentgos are given as a gesture of appreciation during holiday season. Award ceremonies goses give recognition toinguished servicemen/women who have made significant contributions totopowering American aviation or space programs From its humble beginnings as an armofthe government through today’s vibrant gift traditions within the USAF, it is clear that airforce Gift History is one way that our organization continuesto make a meaningful impact on behalfofthe people we serve!
The USAF gift history begins with a donation in 1916. The USAAF later became the USAF and continued to donate gifts until it was discontinued in 1992.
Durango, Colorado is a small town in the Mountain West region of the United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of Pueblo County. The name means "place where the sheep pastured." The first Europeans to visit Durango were Spanish traders and travelers who passed through in 1604. A stagecoach route from Santa Fe ran through Durango on its way to Cheyenne and Fort Laramie. A wagon road was built from Pueblo to Durango in 1868, and it became an important trade center during the gold rush days of Colorado. Durango's location made it one of the most convenient points for transportation during these years; goods could be shipped up the Animas River into New Mexico or down into Arizona by boat before being transported by rail back to Denver or other towns in Colorado. The towns along this wagon trail grew rapidly as miners started arriving with their families to find wealth beyond anything they could imagine. By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Durango proper, and by 1875 that number had reached 5,000! Mining operations continued until around World War II when all but a few mines closed due to competition from more modern methods of mining such as stripmining and open-pit mining. Today, Durango still retains much of its historic charm: many buildings are still standing including the old post office which has been preserved as a museum; downtown is full of restored businesses and buildings dating back centuries; and lakeside walks abound throughout town giving visitors a sense that they are actually within walking distance of some old timers!
