Colorado Springs is a city in and the County seat of Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 553,824 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Colorado Springs were the Jicarilla Apache tribe. In 1876, General George Armstrong Custer led his army through Arapaho Nation territory towards Fort Carson to attack Native Americans there. As he neared the village of Black Mesa, he discovered an unoccupied cabin by the river and decided to take it for himself. The US Cavalry Infantry arrived just in time to prevent Custer from taking military possession of the cabin and town began to grow rapidly around it. In 1892, after years of wrangling between local mining companies and federal authorities over claims on land near today's Downtown Colorado Springs, a treaty was signed granting all present-day Indian tribes title to most of what are now eastern Arapaho County and portions of western Park County. At that time Colfax Mining Company was one of several mining interests granted special permission by US Secretary Edwin Stanton to establish themselves in what would become Colorado Springs proper. Today's downtown area was built on land that had been part of Colfax Mining Company's Gold Hill Mines which opened up during 1893–1894 when production reached an all-time high thanks largely to dredging efforts authorized by then Ulysses S Grant administration under pressure from gold miners across America led by San Francisco banker Andrew Johnson Sr.. Today many notable buildings in Downtown Colo Springs were built as a result including: The White House (1909), Pikes Peak Residential Building (1911), First National Bank building (1920), Masonic Temple (1922), Hoover Dam Headquarters Complex (1945). On July 29th 1870 José Joaquin de la Cruz y Costilla founded Our Lady Of La Purísima Conception Parish Church on Main Street south side Of wadsworth Avenue east side Of High School grounds at present day corner Of 3rd Street & Academy Road witnst Ft Huachuca Creek nearby . On December 12th 1870 sucessful launch conducted from schooner "Colorado" off shore festivities included dances, processions & Processional dinner at our church with Governor Fremont officiating .. Our Lady has served as Divine Mercy Parish Church since that date
The City of Colorado Springs was founded on May 25, 1859 by James K. Polk and his wife Lucy as the County Seat of Morgan County. The population of the City grew rapidly in the years following its founding and by 1870, it had reached over 100,000 people. In 1908, Colorado Springs became an independent city under the provisions of the Municipal Code of Colorado. On December 1, 1914, a fire destroyed much of downtown Colorado Springs but did not cause any loss to property or injury to citizens. On October 15, 1927, President Herbert Hoover signed into law The Local Option Sales Tax Act which gave residents in Colorado Springs the right to vote on local issues including Measure B which proposed limited funding for public works projects within the city limits. This referendum passed with 56% voting against and 44% voting in support of limiting city council power. TheCity has experienced many economic changes throughout its history including during World War II when it served as a major munitions manufacturing center; after that time it has been characterized as a bedroom community for Denverites until recent expansions have brought more commercial and residential development within walking distance of central business district
