The Colorado Springs Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's Strategic Aerospace Command and its 9th Air Division. With over 20,000 personnel and more than 100 systems located on or near the base, it is one of the most important airfields in the Colorado Rockies. In 1949, U.S.AAF General Curtis LeMay assigned Lieutenant Colonel George Withers as commander of 3d Bombardment Wing (3 BW). The wing was based at Grand Junction airport and had been formed from elements of 4th Bombardment Wing (4 BW) which had been activated at Nellis AFB on October 15, 1944 as a medium bomber unit. 3 BW became operational with Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircraft on February 17, 1949. In 1951, when General LeMay moved his command to Colorado Springs, Colo., 3 BW was reassigned to him there as part of 1st Strategic Aerospace Division under Ninth Air Force (9 AF). In 1955-1956 Major General Hap Arnold replaced Major General LeMay as Commander in Chief USAF and reassigned 3 BW back to 1st SAD under Arnold's command. In 1957-1958 MajorGeneral Curtis Eaker assumed command of Ninth AF; he reorganized Andover AFB into three commands: Headquarters Group (HQ), Groups I & II (Groups I being responsible for strategic bombardment operations while Groups II were responsible for Tactical Bomber Command flying combat missions). On September 10th 1958 HQ USAF Detachment 740 at Andover AFB was transferred from HQ USAAF Europe to Headquarters USAF 9 AF; this detachment included Headquarters Squadron 740 which had been detached from 4BW prior to that date also stationed at Andover AFB effective September 10th 1958. Withdrawal of all American forces from Korea began on July 27th 1960 when First Combat Wing/ Eighth Air Force became alert and began firing missiles off Kwajalein Atoll effective August 5th 1960; these missiles were called "Aurora" missiles by USAFE because they could be seen by radar operators orbiting around Kwajalein Atoll - these Canberras constituted the first time such an operation had ever been attempted in military history! On November 12, 1960 Headquarters USAF deployed groups I & II along with A-10 Warthog ground attack planes equipped with infrared guided bombs against targets inside North Vietnam although only limited results were achieved due primarily to poor weather conditions during the mission which began late Sunday evening local time Sunday November 11 th instead of Wednesday morning local time like planned due to bad cloud cover over South Vietnam! The following day saw two more objectives: Targeting a weapons depot at Long Thanh Province}and bombing a refinery situated within hamlet Xa Vinh Chonhan? both attacks resulting in no loss however damage done to infrastructure! On December 6th 1962 major general curtis eaker relieved general lemay as Commander inChief USAF and reassigned all Strategic Missile Commands except for 3BW which reverted back under 1st SAD control effective January 2nd 1963! All other commands reverted back Under their respective commanders effective that date including HQ RAF Europe where Detachment 740 previously resided.. 3 BW remained inactive untilactivated on October 15 th 1989 when it again returned under 1st SAD control following closure of Grand Junction Airport . It reopened May 15 th 1990 after being inactive for almost 25 years !!

In light of these constraints and Air Force's long history of air gift support, we take this opportunity to honor some keyAir Force figures who have made an impact on American society through their donations or support for various causes within our armed forces- a list that would be incomplete without such luminaries as General Curtis LeMay (the architect behind Operation Overlord), Admiral Harry Zinner (the founder and first commander of US Naval Forces Europe), Major General Sonny Bonilla (headquarters Commandant at Fort Benning), Colonel Don Armstrong (commanding officer at Pope AFB), Major General George Hildebrandt (director general for strategic weapons programs at Army Research Laboratory) and many others. As we continue our nation's journey into a future where airpower will continue to play an important role in defense policy decisions across every continent – whether those decisions are directed against terrorists or other threats – we must remember these past individuals who have helped make this possible. Their generosity leaves a lasting legacy that can never be forgotten.
