Broomfield, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 9,644 at the 2010 census. Broomfield is located just south of Interstate 25 and east of the Pacific Crest Trail. It is bordered by Park County to the north, Larimer County to the east, Jefferson County to the south, and Arapahoe County to the west. The first people in Broomfield settled in 1859 on land that now includes much of what is today Broomecrest Township and part of Falcon Heights Township. At that time, there were only about 100 residents in what is now Broomfield. The town was founded as a station on the Great Northern Railway (G&N) from Denver to Fort Collins. The G&N built a depot here and named it after General John Bourke's headquarters at Fort Garland near present-day Golden, Colorado. In 1880, however, G&N operations were discontinued due to competition from Union Pacific Railroad (UP). In 1881, two years after UP had taken over G&N operations from bankrupt Genesee & Wyoming Railroad (GNW), Broomfield became an independent company under management of its own board of directors. The first post office opened in 1862 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The first school opened in 1865 and remain open until 1978; then it became an adult education center known as Western Springs Community College. In 1971, when Boulder City began annexing parts of Park County for municipal purposes,[1] Broomfield voted not to annex into Boulder City.[2] From 1972 through 1984,[3] Broomfield served as its own municipality; however, annexation by Boulder City occurred during that period because Park County had not yet been divided into townships.[4][5] As part of Boulder City's effort to become more urbanized,[6][7][8][9] annexation proposals for other municipalities within Park County have been rejected multiple times[10][11]. On December 12th 2006,[12] voters passed Proposition 1rolling back most zoning changes enacted during 2002-2006 which sought denser growth rates throughout much portions of our rural community while preserving agricultural values dear to many citizens[13]. This vote set off a firestorm with some accusing proponents thereof of hypocrisy given their prior support for density control whilst simultaneously opposing any kind development outside their boundaries
