Broomfield is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins metropolitan area. Broomfield was founded in 1876 as a farmstead on the east bank of the Bow River. The name change to Broomfield after John H. Broomfeldt purchased land there in 1881 and built a sawmill and gristmill on the riverbank. The men who founded Broomfield were pioneer farmers and ranchers who arrived in Weld County during the late 19th century seeking to create new homesteads along the banks of the Bow River. The first residents of Broomfield began settling in what is now parts of northeast Mesa and west Fort Collins neighborhoods in 1876. By 1889, most residents had relocated to homes that they built on or near present-day Center Drive and Main Street.
