The Sutters were visiting Broomfield from their home in Utah when they received the gift and decided to give it to their son, John W. Sutter Jr., who had just moved to Broomfield from Salt Lake City. The first store in Broomfeld conducted business under the name “Hat Emporium” until it was renamed “Hat emporium” again in 1923 after owner Dolphus Cramer lost his lease and closed the store. Broomfield was founded in 1868 by John Ralston and James Wickersham as a small outpost on the southern edge of what is now Broomfield County. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Clear Creek River and its access to irrigation water from nearby mountains. Broomfield is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado and the county seat of Arapaho County. The population was 25,611 at the 2010 census, making it the fifteenth-largest city in Colorado. It has been part of the Denver–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area since 2003. Broomfield is also home to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Military Park, one of only three NPS national military parks in the United States and one of only two located in Colorado. Broomfield was settled by Scottish settlers in 1859 on land that would eventually become Arapaho County. The town site was surveyed by Major General George Armstrong Custer during his 1863 campaign against Native American tribes living near Fort Larimer along what is now Interstate 25. The first post office opened in 1868, and Broomfield became a municipality in 1870. In 1893, broome field took its name from John Broome, an early settler who farmed there for many years before moving to Aspen Mines and later Denver City Limits (now within Aurora). In 1903, Broomfield incorporated as a city under the authority of the newColorado Constitution which granted cities such powers over public works and services as well as streets and other features thereof within their boundaries subject to vote by residents at large with no property qualifications or limits on how much may be added or removed from these boundaries without special election notice or action by the City Councilor/Mayor/Councilmember(s). In response to growing growth within its borders and increasing demand for services provided by its citizens – including but not limited to police protection, firefighting efforts, trash collection etc.–the City council authorized annexation of neighboring townships beginning with Thornton on April 15th, 1907 constituting then-ninth largest annexation ever across Colorado at that time (and still remains seventh largest today). This authorized annexation resulted in Broomfield becoming both second-largest city east ofDenver proper after Golden (then known as “The Mile High City”) while also adding significant territory lying southward along I-25 beyond Aurora into newly annexed Arapaho County! On October 1st 1916 Broomfield passed a resolution recognizing World War I veteran Clarence "King" Ferguson as having fought nobly for our country fighting alongside Our America's forces abroad; this act resultant led to King's nickname "Father Time" being bestowed upon him throughout his life thereafter!
