The Colorado Air Force Museum in Broomfield, Colorado, is home to the most significant collection of airforce memorabilia in the United States. This collection includes items from World War II through the present day. The museum was founded in 1951 and includes a squadron of Boeing jet bombers, an aerial refueling tanker, and a KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. One of the unique aspects of this collection is that it has been donated by various military members and their families over the years. His donation eventually grew into what is now known as The Armstrong Collection at The Colorado Air Force Museum (CAM). Broomfield is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Weld County. Broomfield was founded in 1876 by Protestants who came to central Colorado from eastern Nebraska and Kansas to escape religious persecution. Today, Broomfield is a mixed-use town with a downtown district and several smaller villages spread throughout the community. Broomfield's history began with its founding as a post office on April 20, 1876 by Protestant settlers who had come to central Colorado from eastern Nebraska andKansas in search of freedom from religious persecution. The name of the town derived from "broom" - an early settler's nickname for Central City, Omaha Township (now part of Greeley), Iowa Territory (later called Denver), and finally Broomfield township in Weldon County, Kansas - all located near where Broomfield now stands. The original post office was moved to its present location on Main Street in 1881 after becoming too difficult to move around due to Indian raids which were common during that time period. In 1882, Broomfield became the home of what is now known as Centennial Hall which served as the county courthouse until 1914 when it was replaced by the current courthouse building on First Avenue North. In 1928, Broomfield voters passed an ordinance creating a fire department which opened in 1929. That same year saw the first annexation of neighboring townships – Centennial Heights into Broomeville and New Brighton into Weaverville – making BroomFIELD both an incorporated municipality as well as one of centralColorado's most rapidly growing communities during that era.
