The Colorado Air National Guard (CANA) was founded in 1912 as the Colorado Volunteer Militia. It became a full-time national guard force on July 1, 1916. The first major air show and competition held by the CANA was at Morrison Field in Golden, Colorado on October 6th, 1916. The event attracted more than 10,000 spectators. In 1938, the CANA changed its name to the Colorado Air National Guard and activated its first helicopter squadron. In 1945, after World War II ended, the Colorado Air National Guard adopted an active service policy which extended to all United States military forces and their overseas counterparts as well.
