TheTownship of Aurora was organized in 1872 and named for AURORA MOUNTAIN, which is located south of the town. The first store in Aurora opened its doors in 1875 and the townspeople began trading goods with settlers living nearby on Long Trail. In 1886, Aurora became a city and incorporated as a village under the name Aurora Springs. The following year saw the opening of what is now known as City Hall which served as both municipal offices and a meeting place for the community until 1918 when it burned down. In 1912, Aurora merged with Park Hill to form a new municipality called Park Hill-Aurora. On July 1st of that year all businesses within the newly formed municipality were consolidated into one building known as "The Town Hall". At that time it was also announced that auroras third high school would be built within the boundaries of Park Hill-Aurora and would be called "The High School". That school closed in 1951 but has been reborn multiple times including most recently in 2016 as "NorthPark"High School\. On November 3rd, 2006 votes were taken by residents of Park Hill-Aurora to change their name to Aurorahttown due to concerns about confusion with other towns within Weld County with similar names such as Arvada, Golden Valley, Thornton and Commerce City\ . After much discussion among all involved (including Mayor Tom Kiefer)aurorahttownwas adopted unanimously by all voting citizens on December 2ndfollowing an open house presentation from Superintendent Drue Bigham assisted by Sheriff's Deputy Don Weisman\ .
