Norwalk, California's maritime history goes back to the 1800s when Norwalk was a small town in the southern part of Orange County. The first post office in Norwalk was established in 1824 and it remained operational until 1903. In that year, the town amalgamated with other towns in Orange County and its post office became a part of the new county. There were also several businesses founded during this time including a wharf and boatyard, a bakery, and a grocery store. The late 1800s saw an increase in shipbuilding activity as various docks were built along the coast of Norwalk. This led to an increase in jobs for local citizens as well as imports from foreign countries. By 1900, Norwalk had become one of the most significant fishing ports on Long Island Sound. During World War II,Norwalk played an important role as Naval Base Manhattan Beach and shipping dock Noe Valley contributed to Allied victory.
Norwalk, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 66,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger City of San Diego. The Norwalk area began as Rancho San Miguel de Aguayo and was patented on October 12, 1846 by Manuel Nieto and his wife Doña Ana Sanchez. It became part of the newly created County of San Diego on February 3, 1850. The town's namesake (Norwalk) was platted in 1865 by Captain John Latham Underwood for Halsey & Winters merchants who had bought Rancho Aguayo from David Perez. A post office called Norwalk was established in 1868, and remained open until 1907. Norwalk experienced its first tornado outbreak on October 11-12, 1908 when two tornadoes touched down near downtown; one killed two people and injured thirty-six others. That same year saw also its first earthquake with a magnitude 5.7 quake that struck at 6:37 PM PDT on November 1 just north of where present day Pioneer Boulevard crosses Interstate 805 just east of I-805/Pioneer Road intersection. No injuries were reported but several homes were destroyed or damage done to property estimated at $5000USD per home including an old firehouse which still stands today across the street from US 101 southbound Exit 114A off I-805 about 2 blocks west of what is now Pioneer Boulevard between Broadway and Arlington Drive In 1915 Norwalk incorporated as a city under state law giving it more autonomy than before although it still shared borders with San Diego County through development rights granted through various treaties between the United States government and Mexico related to land grants made during Mexican rule over southern California including parts now in Orange County such as Torrance and Riverside Counties In 1933 after years of planning led by Mayor Harry Freeman – then an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department – Mayor Cesar Chavez approved plans to build a large housing project called Mission Hills which would have been located parallel to existing streets gridlocked with traffic while still providing access via secret underground roads linking it all together quite unlike anything else then being built in Southern California at that time This highly controversial project never materialized however later developers would add more homes onto Mission Hills making it into one large housing complex known today as Mission Hills Village which continues to this day serve as an important commercial center for Norwalk
