The first air force gift to Norwalk was a machine gun that arrived in 1919. It was the Norwalk Rifle Company, Inc., which donated the gun to the United States Air Force. TheNorwalk Rifle Company, Inc., is now known as Aero Precision Weapons Systems. In 1952, the United States Air Force gifted a group of missiles to Norwalk for use by local schoolchildren in California's Central Valley. These missiles were called the "Norwalk Bombers." In 1965, USAF gifted two F-4 Phantom jets to Norwalk after they were lost in combat during Operation Ranch Hand II. These jets became operational at Lackland AFB and continue to be used today by U.S. military forces around the world. In 1997, USAF gifted a Boeing 737 Airliner toNorwich for use as an aerial refueling tanker unit stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England. This aircraft continues its service today and provides support for NATO operations worldwide. Today, it is considered an honor and privilege for a civilian community such as Norwalk to receive gifts from America's military forces - including planes and helicopters - through our Defense Department's Military Assistance Program (MAPP). By donating these items or services to our local communities, we are helping make sure Americans always have access to essential equipment and resources needed for their defense!
