Upon their return trip in 1771, they passed through Coronado on their way back to Mexico City. The village continued to exist for some time after this visit; however, it soon fell victim to Apache warriors who burned down most of its buildings in 1820. The first recorded mention of Coronado comes from John Day in his diary entry for September 9, 1819: "At daybreak we reachedbthe island called Point Loma [Lomas de la Costa], which is about fifty miles long and twenty wide." This point had been named by Day after the rancho (land grant) he received from Governor Manuel Nieto in 1818 for his part in suppressing Mexican revolt against Spanish rule. Little did Day know that almost seventy years later, much of this land would be included within the boundaries of modern-day San Diego County! In 1541, Diego Velázquez de Andrade, captain of the Spanish treasure fleet that was exploring California, landed on what is now Coronado Island in San Bernardino County. He named it after his friend and mentor, Christopher Columbus. The islands became a part of Mexico when Spain lost its colonies in the 1821 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States acquired California in 1848 through the Mexican-American War, and quickly claimed most of the state except for some small pieces that remained under Mexican rule. In 1906, Congress passed the so-called “Comprehensive Plan of Western Expansion” which proposed creating new states in western California – including Alta California (above) – as part of a larger plan to take all of North America by force. But because there were no white people living in these areas at the time, land acquisition and development proceeded quite slowly. By 1925, only 10% of what is now Alta California had been surveyed or purchased from Native American groups. On October 9, 1912—marking one hundred years since Captain Diego Velázquez de Andrade first discovered Coronado Island—the first permanent Anglo-Saxon settlement in Alta California was founded onsite by citizens of Reno City east of Sacramento Valley when they built a wire fence around their own property to prevent Creek Indians from raiding their crops and stealing livestock. Cortez and his men had successfully raided the Mexican city of Mexico City on 15 August 1492, after a three-month siege. A week later, they captured the rest of Baja California and Californias capital in San Diego. On 20 August Cortez arrived at Coronado's outpost La Jolla on the southern tip of San Diego Island to find that it was under siege by about 25,000 Aztec Indians led by their chieftain Montezuma II. After making peace with the natives, Cortez sailed back up San Diego Bay to Tiburon Point on 30 August and made an offering of gold to Montezuma II in exchange for his submission. The Spanish then burned down all of the Indian villages in present-day Sonora County, Arizona, as a sign of their victory over their enemies. Aftermath The conquest has left behind a large area of California which is now known as the United States; most notably Los Angeles County and parts of Riverside County in Southern California. The Mexica people were expelled from California after Cortez' victory and never returned to that territory again; however, some small groups continued to live there until 1821 when Mexico secularized its indigenous population control policies.
