He named it Isla de la Cruz (Island of the Cross) after this remote location. In 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded by Franciscan missionaries under Spanish rule on land which had been donated by Spain for this purpose. The mission's primary task was to evangelize the native peoples and provide them with religious instruction and material aid; however, because there were no roads or trails leading into or out of San Diego County at that time, many people believedmissionaries were living on an isolated island deep in sea! In 1853, when Los Angeles became a United States territory following Mexican independence, part of Rancho Santa Fe -- including present-day Coronado -- became part of Los Angeles County. This left much unincorporated area within San Diego County undeveloped and largely rural until after World War II when significant development occurred around Naval Base Point Loma (now known as Downtown La Jolla). At that time most jobs were done near naval shipsyards ashore or aboard Navy submarines moored offshore; however, residential areas quickly grew up around these suburban districts because they offered easy access to freeways and other amenities. By 1990 most residents lived in suburban districts outside the city limits; however, somecore urban residents do still maintain close ties with their historic neighborhoods through social events such as potlucks and bingo nights at local churches/synagogues/ mosques etc., even going so far as to live inside their original homes for short periods during special occasions such as Fourth of July celebrations or Christmas

The area that now includes the city of San Diego, California was first inhabited by the Ohlone people before being explored by Spanish explorers in 1542. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and founded its own government, which included San Diego County. The following year, the United States acquired Mexican land west of the Colorado River as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On July 4,1846, Ulysses S. Grant issued a proclamation naming San Diego County as part of his gift to Mexico for their victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Buena Vista Heights. Over time, various businesses and organizations were established in downtown San Diego and other parts of what is now San Diego County. One such organization was the American School District No. 2 (now known asUSD2), which opened in 1865 to provide education for children living in rural areas east of Interstate 5 along the edge of present-day Scripps National Forest. In 1912, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y Pacheco donated 372 acres (160 hectares) on behalf of the City Council to become Parkland Park Reserve; this parcel would eventually become home to Coronado Village development project within today’s city limits. During World War II there was an expansion effort within Naval Air Station Miramar to build an airfield adjacent to Rancho del Norte; however this project never came to fruition due to wartime restrictions on airport construction technology at that time. On February 14, 1951 Congress passed legislation designating Coronado Creek as a national memorial stream honoring all those who served or have served in our country during World War II or any war fought since then up through September 11th 2001A public hearing on May 13th 1953 resulted in enactment by state lawmakers making it illegal for anyone without proper military identification or documentation to enter or use parkland owned by the City or State thereof without written consent from both parties concerned; this prohibition remains effective today except for special events conducted pursuant to specific permits granted pursuant to state law These days many people visitCoronado via short hikes beginning near US-101 southbound just outside Of Town Center closeby Gassaway Recreation Area & ending about 1/4 mile southof old military base road called Gurley Rd
The first Europeans to visit Coronado were the Spanish in 1602, who named it San Carlos de la Florida after Saint Carlos of Canarias. The area that is now known as Coronado was part of Rancho San Antonio del Campo, a Mexican land grant given to Francisco Vásquez de Arco by King Charles II of England in 1765. The local Costanoan people called the area Punta de los Reyes because they could see three stars from an altitude of about 20 feet (6 m). In 1821, Mission San José was founded on the site of what is now Park City and Punta de las Palmas was added to the mission complex. By 1824, Mission San Diego had been completed on an adjacent hill and Father Manuel Nieto built a small chapel on its east side. In 1828, Governor Alvaro Obregon transferred jurisdiction from Mexico to California andestablished English-speaking missions throughout California. On February 14, 1830, Don Manuel Nieto married Maria Elena Dominguez at Mission Santa Clara; their children include Antonio Nieto and Dolores Nieto Niebla.
