When the United States Air Force deployed its first unit in Coronado, California in 1948, it provided a unique gift for local residents. The unit was called the "Aircrew Unit" and it arrived with ten Aircrew pilots and their aircraft. The aircrews were quickly assignment to various posts within the USAF, including at Andersen AFB in Guam and Kadena AB in Japan. Since then, the USAF has sent nearly 2,500 military personnel to Coronado for a variety of purposes including training and visiting family. Some of these deployments have been short-term while others have lasted several months or even years. Over time, units from all branches of the USAF have stationed here at Coronado Airport. Today, Coronado is home to two US Air Force bases as well as three Navy installations - all of which support Operation Inherent Resolve - one of the world's largest military operations. This deployment history provides an insight into how our country's Armed Forces are able to maintain order and protect our citizens around the globe.

It became a part of Mexico City after Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. In 1848, Coronado bought Rancho Santa Fe de la Bolsa from Manuel Nieto and sold it to John C. Frémont for $5 million. The city was named after Commodore John C. Fremont who made a failed attempt to explore the Pacific Northwest in 1846. There are numerous ruins located within the boundaries of the city including Mission San Antonio del Bacalar, Mission San José de Arcos, and Mission Dolores de Coronado (the only mission still standing in California). The city is home to two universities: UC Irvine and UC Hastings College of Business Administration.

In 1769, Spanish explorer and missionary Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed from San Francisco Bay to the California coast. He was the first European to enter what is now California. After landfall on Santa Catalina Island, Cabrillo explored the coastline and sound for several weeks before sailing back out into the bay. In 1770, he returned to Santa Catalina Island and claimed it as part of Spain. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. Mexican authorities began a campaign to expel all British settlers in Alta California. To prevent this invasion, Mexican President Agustín Carranza ordered General Vicente Guerrero to march on Sacramento City with an army of 5,000 men in late 1821. When Guerrero reached Sacramento City on April 20th of that year, he found only about 500 people living there. He decided not to pursue the British colonists and turned his attention instead towards destroying Mission San José de la Sierra which was located at the mouth of Kings Canyon River near modern-day Riverside County. On October 24th of that year (1821), General Carranza discovered Mission San Diego de Alcalá by boat while exploring south down the delta of Kings River in present-day Orange County. The mission had been founded by Father Junípero Serra around 1772 after finding trade winds blowing through a small canyon on top of hills near where Coyote Valley now stands. Because it lay within Mexican territory at that time (and because Padres Luis Palou had been killed in battle against Napoleonic forces four years earlier),mission San Diego de Alcalá became a providential target for attack by Carranza’s forces during his campaigns against hostile Native Americans living along or near portions of these eastern Californias (see also Battle for Coronado). On November 25th1771—just days after Father Junípero Serra’s death—a group of Spanish soldiers under Colonel Jose Joaquin Altamirano attacked and captured two friars associated withSan Diego de Alcalá: Father José Gabriel Pacheco and Fray Francisco Xavier Baez y Arceydez.–This event is known as “the Capture of La Jolla” Angered at this treatment, Padre Agustín Vásquez organized a defense force made up mostlyof Indian laborers commanded by Manuel Nieto “El Cangrejo” who fought off three assaults by Carranza's troops over five days beginning December 3rd.– trapped between enemy fire from above and belowground under heavy destruction from artillery bombardment caused significant losses for both sides but finally withdrew when news arrived via runners that reinforcements were available– This action helped set the stage for subsequent Anglo-Mexican conflicts over land grants along US -Mexico border
Corsican refugees had first settled in the California gold country in 1848, and by 1850 they numbered about 8,000. In 1851, a group of them founded the city of Coronado on Mission Bayou. The town was first known as Spanish Town because many of its residents were from Spain. When Mexico won its war for independence from Spain in 1821, most of these Spaniards fled to Mexico City. A few families remained behind in California and began to grow crops and Rancho San Francisco de Asís was born. They also imported European workers to do much of the manual labor on their large estates.
