At that time there were few settlements on the east coast of North America and this was especially true for California because gold had not been found there until 1848. In 1850 a group of men from San Francisco came to sell goods at the market in Ceres. One of these men was John Sutter who founded Sutter's Mill here in 1850 and named it after his friend and mentor, George Washington Carver. The mill produced flour, cheese and other products until it closed in 1957. After closure, many local residents decided to stay away from farming because they believed it would be harder since no one knew how to till corn or other crops correctly In 1906 Wm Hite put up a sign reading "Ceres" on an old post office building which he had purchased near his farmstead in west Ceres Township The community revived when local landowners donated land for townhood status in 1913-14 with plans to build a theater, library and public square as part of a larger plan called "Ceres Plan." However those plans were never realized due to lack of funds When statehood was granted to California in 1912 most residents chose Noto Valley as their new county seat but some officials from Ceres moved to Noto Valley so they could keep control over their community However by 1916 when Noto Valley became incorporated as Sacramento County all citizens within its borders were given voting rights for both houses of the county legislature which then ratified the merger into Butte County effective January 1st 1917 . This left Ceres with just 6 residents out of an original 23 . In 1923 Rocklin annexing nearby Parlier so not only did Ceres lose its second largest city but also its school district
