Ceres, California is a small town in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,859. Ceres is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and is bordered to the south by Bakersfield and to the north by Mono Lake. The town's ZIP code is 93723. The name Ceres comes from two Native American words meaning "place where bear live." In 1872 when Hernando Cisneros discovered Ceres he named it after General José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla who had been his chief lieutenant in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War era. On July 15, 1887, residents of Ceres celebrated their centennial with a celebration which included music and fireworks over Bakersfield Creek. The event was attended by Governor Pio Pico and members of Congress. On October 6th 1899 local newspapers published an article about a group of citizens who desired to rename their community for John F Kennedy because he was then running for President against Harrison Gray Otis Jr.. Cerro Gordo (meaning "mountain peak") became JFK's campaign slogan in California that year. In 1957-1958 Mayor Rufus Akins organized a centennial parade through downtown Ceres which featured floats made out of aluminum cans filled with candy bars and other snacks as well as model locomotives built by local students at Great Lakes High School in nearby Moberly Heights behind Area D Movie Ranch; all were decorated with patriotic symbols such as red stars on white stripes and blue flags emblazoned on canoes etcetera. There also were games for children including corn hole (the game most people know today), Strawberry ShortcakeSkip calc games etcetera while adults enjoyed refreshments like hot dogs or soft drinks from local businesses like Mrs Pepper's convenience store or Mr Kapp's grocery store across from Town Hall/Cemetery until late into the night; streetlights adorned with national flagpoles provided illumination for much of this busy scene complete with bandstands housing orchestras playing appropriate marches honoring America’s past 100 years culminating at sunrise next morning just before commercial traffic once again took over

Ceres is an American town in Yuba County, California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Ceres is located south of I-5 on the southern edge of the Kern River Valley and east of Fresno. According to the United States Census Bureau, Ceres has a total area of 17 square miles (45 km²), all land. It is one of only two communities in Yuba County with a population over 1,000 and one of only two towns in California with a population over 100,000. The first settlers to arrive in what would become Ceres were five men from Oregon who crossed the Kern River in 1847 while looking for new land to ranch after being driven out of their original homestead by Native Americans. They named their new settlement "Cerro Gordo" after Mount Shasta which they had seen from their Rancho San Miguel near Sacramento. In 1871 when Yosemite National Park was established, part of present-day Ceres was included within its boundaries as part of Calaveras County. In 1899 it merged into Yuba County and became an independent town again under then-Mayor Roy Jinks's leadership. After Jinks's death in 1975, Mayor John Kapp took office until his retirement in 1992; Kapp's successor was Tom DeVito until his resignation effective April 30th, 2008 because he could not run for re-election despite having been elected November 3rd 2006 with more than 60% between him and nearest challenger Rudy Salinas Jr.. The last mayor before that was Don Nehlen who served from December 8th 2009 - January 3rd 2010 due to term limits set by state statute limiting any consecutive terms to three years maximum without possibility for reelection or appointment thereafter On July 20th 1912 an earthquake struck Terra del Fuego off the coast of Southern Chile killing more than 300 people including many prominent Chilean geologists working on mapping seismic activity thereabouts including Santiago Pichardo de la Torre y de la Hoz y others associated with Academia Real de Química (Royal School of Chemistry) including Juan José Oliva also known as “Pancho” caused by opening up gas reservoirs underlying this part flooring about 37 km northwest side Xcalcotea Island between 1915 – 1916 during nonstop exploration drilling campaign led by Hugo Eckert himself along side Francisco Chiappe Earthquake Hazards Observatory scientific observership began
