The department was always a part of the local community and would often provide donated items to local businesses and individuals. One of these donations was an army surplus artillery piece that the department placed into the hands of one of their own members. This particular donation is significant because it marked the first time that an army surplus artillery piece had been gifted to a local fire department. It also served as a reminder that our community was supportive of its military members and their missions. Throughout most of its history, Ceres Volunteer Fire Department has focused on providing service to its surrounding communities. In recent years, however, we have seen an increase in our volunteer force and needs for manpower specifically forEMS services. As such, we have decided to become one of only a few departments in Northern California that will be deploying firefighters during this year’s Memorial Day Weekend events. We are grateful for all the support we have received from our community over the years; however, this is not simply an act of kindness or charity but rather something fundamental to who we are as firefighters. We know that with each deployment there is great risk involved but we take seriously every challenge and opportunity presented to us. Our goal is alwaysto ensure Prompt & Safe response to emergencies both within our department and throughout Northern California!

Ceres is located in the Mojave Desert of California, about 115 miles from Los Angeles. It was named for the Roman goddess Ceres, the patron deity of agriculture. The first European to sight Ceres was Spanish navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. He named it San Francisco de las Californias after his ship San Francisco and his discoveries along the California coast led to America becoming a part of Spain with Mexico following in 1769. The name “Ceres” was only given to a small part of Ceres because it had been discovered by two separate expeditions over several years each and not as one body. The first time that anyone saw Ceres they thought it was a planet because its light seemed too great for an object smaller than Earth. However when Italian explorer Giovanni Calvelli discovered Ceres on April 14th 1538 he realized that this could not be true because there were no planets around other than Earth and Sun! This realization made him realize that there must be another world out there larger than either Earth or Sun! It wasn’t until 1601 when Englishman John Flamsteed became the first person to land on Pluto which finally confirmed that there were other worlds beyond our Solar System! However, even though Pluto was confirmed as an alien planet by Europe during this time period nobody wanted to give it a name because they didn’t know what else to call it! Eventually someone decided that calling it Ceres would make more sense since asteroids are called comets while planets are called celestial bodies! So on November 5th 1801 Cerialis Eratosthenes gave Ceres its current name after discovering evidence that she orbits around sun like all other objects do!
In 1847, the first permanent residents of Ceres, California were British-born John Sutter and his family. The town was founded on the east bank of the Sacramento River, about two miles northeast of what is now downtown Sacramento. The Sutter family erected a log cabin in 1849 and started a small farm. They soon discovered gold in the area and began to prospect for it. In 1850, they formed a company with other investors to purchase some land at the head of Mission Creek for $5 per acre. They named their new venture "Cerberus" after one of the bulls from Heracles'Labyrinth (now part of Paradise Park). The operation went well until 1852 when an earthquake struck Northern California, causing great damage and leaving many people homeless. With no practical way to get gold out to market, Cerberus was soldered together as partnerships by its original investors over the next few years. In 1861, John Sutter married Mary Camus; they had five children before he died in 1865 at age 72 years old. His widow continued running Cerberus until her death in 1928. In 1870, James Wickersham took over management of Cerberus from Mrs Camus and continued operations until his death in 1922. From 1902 through 1924, Wickersham's son Harry ran Cerberus as an independent business entity with headquarters located at 3100 E Market Street in downtown Sacramento. After Harry's death in 1954, his son Jay Wickersham took over management and operated Cerberus until 1986 when it merged with Golden West Mines Corporation to form Golden West Mining Company Limited Partnership
