West Memphis, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. West Memphis is located on the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles east of Little Rock and 30 miles northwest of Fayetteville. It is bordered by the towns of Pittsfield and Arkadelphia to the north, North Little Rock to the east, and Harrisonburg to the south. The community was founded in 1881 as part of what would become Pulaski County. It was named for General James W. Westphalen, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Arkansas from 1879-1883. In 1905, West Memphis merged with Pittsfield to form a single municipality. West Memphis was initially primarily agricultural with some light industry until World War II when it began to experience population growth due to its proximity to military installations such as Fort Riley and Fort Smith. During that time period, businesses such as Ford Motor Company built plants in nearby Pittsfield while also manufacturing munitions at two new factories opened in Arkadelphia and North Little Rock. By 1960 only 7% of residents were employed within their own homes while 56% were self-employed or related professional services providers; government employment made up 5%.
