Goodloe decided to give Joe away as a gift to his fellow workers at the lumberyard. Joe remained in West Memphis until 1903 when he was sold again and this time he went to Texas where he became known as John Browning's slave. In 1907, Browning got him into Wichita Falls, Texas where he worked as a barnacle on an oil platform until 1911 when he was sold again and this time ended up being used by John Dillard in Amarillo, Texas. In 1912, Dillard moved him to Denver where he became known as "Dirty Harry" because of how dirty his hands were from working with oil slicks all day long. From Denver, Dirty Harry went on to become one of America's most famous outlaws during World War II. In 1954, Happy Jack opened his first store in Clarksville, Tennessee which became known as "the black place" because it sells only Negro products. The town of West Memphis, Arkansas was founded in 1871 and named after the nearby Memphis, Tennessee city. The first settlers were white people who arrived from Kentucky and Tennessee. They erected a small log cabin near the current site of West Memphis on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1872, two brothers, John Crouch and Hiram Crouch, started a grocery store in what is now West Memphis. The brothers also built a sawmill and gristmill inWest Memphis. In 1875, Jno. Hinton established an agricultural cooperative with other pioneers in present-day Faulkner County. This group became known as the Hinton Agricultural Society. Cotton farming was the predominant industry in early West Memphis because of its location on the Mississippi River floodplain and its access to water resources. By 1900, however, oil exploration had drawn attention to this area and business began to decline for many reasons including competition from Texas oil production and changes in local political leadership that favored coal mining over farming. In 1902, west Memphis incorporated as a town under the name of "Westminster." When cotton prices plummeted during World War I due to enemy action along both fronts (the war resulted in increased imports), Westminster abandoned cotton production and instead developed a mixed-use economy which included retail trade (factory stores) as well as services such as trucking companies that transported goods between towns within northwestern Arkansas but also beyond into Oklahoma Territory (west limb of Kansas). During World War II Westminster continued to operate manufacturing plants providing munitions needed by American forces overseas while their homes were destroyed or bombed by Japanese planes; they managed to remain open until 1945 when all operations ceased due to lack of demand for munitions during peacetime again following world War IIemphasis on nuclear weapons development).
