West Memphis, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–based Combined Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1892 by investors from Tennessee and Missouri who wanted to found a new town in Pulaski County after purchasing land from the Cherokee Nation. The name West Memphis comes from a place called "Memphis" on the Cumberland River where settlers first encountered Indian slaves brought over as labor during the Jackson Purchase of 1802. They named their town for General James H. West who had come to protect them during that time of conflict between Native Americans and white settlers. In 1902, the local paper company bought an interest in the Arkansas Gazette which served as its primary source of news and information about life in the area until it folded in 1903 following a fire that destroyed most of the downtown business district. The city again began to grow when Wagon Wheel Coal Mines opened up nearby and started producing coal for local homes and businesses beginning in 1906. In 1916, Methodist Episcopal pastor J B Goode donated land adjacent to his church lot on Third Street for what would become home plate park and also built some civic buildings including a library and police station which still stand today. During World War II, West Memphis was one of many towns located along Route 66 (the main travel artery through central Arkansas) that were bombed by Allied forces due to German military production inside Arkansas rather than Nazi Germany proper because strategic bombing raids were not authorized within any country at this time according to author David Heinemann's book "Bombing America". The bombings led directly to death or destruction among thousands of people across much of central Arkansas with predominantly African American populations who lost their homes, businesses, friends, families members - all leading directly into poverty thereafter as agricultural production ground down during those years due largely to lack of investment outside wartime-improved education opportunities available especially within African American households throughout rural areas throughout much southern US society prior thereto despite large numbers thereof serving within combatant armies engaged therein ultimately resulting therefrom), although no deliberate targeting or intentional infliction whatsoever took place within these aforementioned portions thereof however numerous unintended civilian fatalities occurred nonetheless as resulted hereinfrom regardless; one result certain thereby being an increased willingness amongst many poorer folk along such routes corridor subsequently resident thereinto cross such routes under cover ensuing thereby avoiding bombings altogether should they so choose even if unintentional collateral damage occurred nevertheless notwithstanding; another consequence resultant being general support among more affluent inhabitants throughout Pulaski County generally for continued military operations against Axis powers worldwide solely pursuant thereto notwithstanding efforts by many foolish individualsamongst less fortunate populace otherwise residing therein generally oppositewise notwithstanding; both consequences having respective negative effects upon social stability overall within said county region nonetheless hereinafter referred unto collectively hereafter known as "World War II Bombshells."

Over time, various other brewers followed suit such as Kees van Heijnen who introduced percolators in 1912 and Jan Steen at Benelux Breweries who introduced cold pressing in 1945. In the early 1800s, West Memphis was a small town in Arkansas. It was known for its cattle and cotton production, as well as its Methodist church. One of the most famous events from this time period is the 101st Precinct riot. On September 11, 1892, a group of white supremacists and Ku Klux Klan members attacked black people living in West Memphis. Violence erupted and dozens of people were killed. The riot is still considered one of the worst riots in American history.
