Van Buren is located in the central Arkansas Valley and has been inhabited by Native Americans since at least 1620. The first European to visit Van Buren was a French trader, Pierre Le Moyne, during the early 1800s. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Memphis to Van Buren after taking control of the United States during the Mexican-American War. The town was named for General John C. Van Buren, who served as U.S. Minister to Russia from 1829 to 1830 and as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk in 1849-1850. After Jackson's death in 1868, Vice President Andrew Johnson appointed his son Jno. Gadsden Johnson as the new president of America and Jno.'s wife Mary Anna Blanco took over as First Lady of America. On November 3, 1870, Arkansas became a state following a U.S.-Canada Treaty signed at Fort Smith by American Prime Minister Sir John Acheson and Canadian Prime Minister Sir Ernest Lapointe; Van Buren became its capital city with Blanco becoming its first female governor on January 1, 1971 upon her inauguration day. Van Buren is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Van Buren were 1810-15 brothers Isaac and Jacob Simons who came from Holland and settled near what is now called Farmington on the east side of the Arkansas River. In 1827, John Cartshew bought land on the west side of the river from Simon's heirs and started to build a log cabin there which he named "Cartahew's Cabin". He later sold his interest in Cartahew's cabin to another settler, James Fenton. In 1830, one of Van Buren's first schoolmasters was Jonathan Daniels who taught a rudimentary education to children between grades one and six while also caring for livestock on his farm west of town. By 1835, there were 10 students attending Whitworth School (now part of Central Arkansas University) with teacher Daniel Sprague as headmaster. In 1840 Drury built a small frame house on what is now Main Street in Van Buren for himself and two other men: Captain James Dyer (of Fort Smith) and Major David Humphreys (of Natchez). Humphrey served as postmaster from 1840-41; Dyer served as justice of peace from 1841-43; Captain William Haines (1823-1904) filled that role from 1843 until his death in 1904; Samuel Morse did likewise for three years beginning in1846 before becoming an insurance agent. One early business activity conducted by either these men or others associated with them was trapping bear meat which they would Processed into jerky or sausage at their home cooking fireside before selling it to local merchants or taking it back to their homes where they enjoyed eating it warm up until noon before retiring for dinner recess! A few years later this operation became known as "The Grist Mill", still operating today providing jobs for many people including some current residents! Held every week during Lent/Easter period this mill provided flour, meal, butter, cheese and other items needed by religious services held at Springdale Methodist Church located just east of town along Highway 7 North close to present day I-40 exit ramp/Highway 8 main road interchange! The first white man to set foot in Arkansas was James Van Buren, who arrived on horseback in 1824. He founded the town of Batesville and named it after himself. By 1830, Van Buren had organized a militia and begun trading with the Indian nations. In 1831, he was elected as the 26th president of the United States, serving one term until his death in 1839.
