The Van Buren Police Department was established in 1917. In that year, the city of Van Buren, Arkansas was incorporated and the police department became a part of the city. The first officer to be hired by the department was constable H.G. Robb. TheAPD grew rapidly and soon had a complement of twenty officers. In 1954, an addition to the squad car was purchased and dedicated as the “Policeman’s Gift Shop” in honor of then-Police Chief Earl W. Chambers and First Sergeant Clarence L. Nachtigall*. This gift shop served as a hub for gifts for members of theVanBuren Police Department and other law enforcement organizations across the United States.* Over time, more gifts have been donated to the PD than any other department in Arkansas* including patrol cars, rifles, handguns, uniforms, tools and equipment*, motorcycles* and even 3 dogs!* To date, over $120,000 has been donated to support our policing mission.*

Van Buren is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,524 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jonesboro–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Van Buren area was settled by settlers from Illinois in 1836. The first post office in Van Buren was established on February 15, 1837. In 1839, the county seat was moved to Fayetteville and Van Buren became a town. On October 4, 1840, Fayetteville incorporated as a city and Van Buren became its second city limits. In 1865, Arkansas statehood came about with the passage of the Arkansas Constitution and on January 3 of that year itdesignated Pulaski County as its new county seat. The City of Van Buren annexed parts of Townships 2nd (Norman), 5th (Chickasaw), 6th (Cottonwood), 7th (Montgomery) and 8th (Logan) from Fayetteville on December 12, 1865; these towns had been designated as part of Fayetteville when it became an incorporated city. On April 14, 1870 – one day after becoming a full-fledged county – Pulaski County voters passed an ordinance incorporating the unincorporated communities located within its boundaries into the new county government including what is now Van Buren. At this time there were only three villages: Clarksdale Landing(now known as Goodnight), Maycomb and West Memphis which all had small populations because they were isolated from larger towns by mountains or rivers which made travel difficult or impossible without horses or wagons; those days are long gone! In 1907 Oklahoma Statehood came about with conflicting statements being given about which state should have jurisdiction over what portion of Arkansas; eventually both states took care of their own business but Pulaski County residents still claim to be Oklahomans through various means such as voter registration drives and other forms of civic engagement! In 1923 construction began on White Sands Arsenal Ammunition Plant near present day White Sands Road/Van Alstyne Boulevard just east of town limits - this plant would become one of world's largest producer’sof firearms ever! Over 100 million rounds were produced here during its operations spanning many years until it closed in 1986 due to economic reasons! Today neighboring Decatur has taken up residence within our borders making Van Buren feel somewhat like home again - although not quite so close to all we once knew & loved . . .

Van Buren was a small town in Arkansas during the 1800s. It was located on the Arkansas River, about 25 miles south of Little Rock. Van Buren had a post office from 1827 to 1887, and its first mayor was James Fenton. The town also had a school, church, and two stores.
Van Buren was first settled in 1820 by Methodist Episcopal missionaries. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought in the Mexican War and was then president of the United States. In 1836, Jackson moved his presidential family to this area and started a cotton plantation here. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, becoming a important center for cotton production. By 1860, Van Buren had a population of about 10,000 people. It declined during the Civil War because of its strategic importance as a crossing point on the Arkansas River. After the war, Van Buren grew slowly again until it became an important city in Arkansas in 1870.
