The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Van Buren, Arkansas. The first navy ship to be commissioned in the state was USS Constitution (1797), which served as the only permanent U.S. military presence on the Arkansas River during the French and Indian War. The present-day Naval Station Great Lakes is also located here, and today’s navy branch is responsible for a wide range of maritime operations throughout the world. The USS Constitution Museum tells itsstory of this esteemed vessel, as well as her successors through exhibits on First Fleet’s visit to Port Royal Island in 1803; USS Maine (1801) during the Mexican-American War;USS Enterprise (1941) during World War II; and most recently, USS Abraham Lincoln (2008). A number of other Vessels from our naval history have been preserved at various locations around town including: NAS Fort Worth (1951), NAS Jacksonville (2007), USMCR Great Lakes Pier #2(2001), BB&T Bank Building(2006), and MSA American Legion Hall(2004). Today, there are over 1,000 sailors assigned to duty with the navy branches stationed throughout Van Buren County. In addition to their civilian counterparts who provide vital support for local businesses and services, these sailors often play an important role in maintaining our nation’s maritime security. As we commemorate America’s naval past, let us also remember that it is those same sailors who will continue to serve America through both international engagements and homeland defense – no matter where they may be located!

The USS Constitution was the first of what would becomeknown as the United States Navy's "big four" warships. commissioned on December 14, 1775 and completed her maiden voyage from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England in March 1776. She participated in several Battles of Yorktown and Battle of Bunker Hill before she finally reached her ultimate destination at Charleston Harbor, SC on April 12, 1781. She served as flagship of Admiral John Paul Jones during his successful campaign to retake Charleston from British forces. In 1814 she was sold to a Spanish navy and renamed La Guerrera (The Warrior). In 1846 she was sold again to a French navy and renamed L'Espadour (The Sword). She served as a naval hospital ship until 1925 when she became the second oldest warship still afloat..
Van Buren was a small town in the eastern Arkansas region of the United States, located about 20 miles southeast of Little Rock. It was founded in 1827 by John Van Buren, a fur trader who had settled in this area. The town became an important center for cotton production and trade, and its location made it an ideal place to conduct business during the 1830s and 1840s when Arkansas was part of Mexico. In 1848, Van Buren became the first U.S. state to be admitted to the Union as a result of the Republican Party's victory over Whig candidates in the general election that year.
