In 1911, Van Buren voters passed another ordinance establishing the city’s police department and authorizing the purchase and sale of handguns. That same year, Mayor John Prentice formed the Gun Control League to try to defeat future ordinances prohibiting firearm sales or possession within the city limits. In 1912, Mayor Prentice also passed an ordinance setting up a government-owned arms dealership where citizens could buy rifles and shotguns from government dealers at marked prices. At this point, gun ownership within the city limits had become quite common. In 1916, Mayor Prentice formed what is now known asthe Arkansas Rifle Association (ARA) to promote rifle hunting and shooting activities within City limits. The ARA has been instrumental in maintaining handgun ownership within City limits ever since then! In 1917, Mayor Prentice again tried to pass an amendment into law preventing individuals from owning more than one handgun per household without prior written consent from their home owner/occupant(s). However, this amendment failed by two votes! In 1921,Van Buren voters adopted an ordinance limiting handgun purchases and possession to those who had a license from either the county sheriff or state game commission (if hunting). This ordinance remains in effect today! In 1958, Mayor Donnell Thompson unsuccessfully proposed amending the Gun Laws of Van Buren so that handguns could be possessed by anyone with an applicable permit from a peace officer – effectively legalizing handgun possession for all lawful purposes! Unfortunately for Donnell Thompson – his proposal was defeated on referendum passage! Today in Van Buren – guns are still very much considered part of local culture! Van Buren is a town in Johnson County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Bentonville metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Van Buren was Captain John Smith on his expedition in 1608. He named it "New Amsterdam" after his new found land in what is now New York City. The town was founded by Marcy Ladd and her husband, James McGillivray, on November 12, 1836. It was platted in 1837 by Amasa Elmore and Wm Hutton. In 1881 it became a city with a population of 507 residents when it amalgamated with other towns in Johnson County. The town has been known for its sawmill and cotton gin industry since its founding until recent years when the mill closed down because of competition from newer mills in neighboring towns. However, some evidence suggests that early Van Buren residents may have grown tobacco as well as cotton while their homes were still unoccupied during this time frame - one such example being an anonymous letter which mentions "a quantity of good Tobacco" which mayhaps be referring to hogsheads or bales of tobacco which would have been packed into wagons and transported back home fresh from the fields

Van Buren was a small town in Arkansas located near the Missouri state line. The first European to visit Van Buren was Capt. James K. Polk in 1846, while he was on his way to see General Andrew Jackson. In 1853, Van Buren became the seat of government for what is now Arkansas. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became the capital of Arkansas in 1861, and it had a population of about 500 people by 1880. The original courthouse in Van Buren burned down in 1865, but a new courthouse was built and used until 1907. The town was also home to the University of Arkansas from 1863 until 1906. The town began as part of Benton County and was named for John Cranch vanBuren, an American politician who served as United States Senator from New York from 1847 to 1850 and as Secretary at War from 1850 to 1853. He then moved to Arkansas where he represented District 11 in the U.S Senate from1853-1859 before moving back to New York City where he died in office on October 2, 1860. The area that is now Van Buren was first settled by French colonists in 1762 during the Louisiana Purchase under President George Washington's presidency. Afterward, various groups traveled through this area searching for land or trade routes with Mexico City because they could not find any suitable sites along the Potomac River or its tributaries due to Native American resistance and flooding caused by heavy rains during winter months leading up to and following the Mexican–American War (1848-48). In 1854, two men wagon trains carrying goods between Independencetown Junction on the Missouri side of the river and Fort Smith on Arkansas side set out for what would become Van Buren after disembarking at Independencetown Landing on July 4th north of present day Arkadelphia/Van Buren AFB Airport northwest of downtown Arkadelphia; these were known as "The Great Wagon Train" due their size (the largest wagon train ever attempted). They were led by Colonel Robert Eaddy (1800-1872), an expert driver who later founded Eaddy Ford Company which manufactured trucks into the 1970s primarily outside Detroit MI;[1] Captain Samuel Fenton Vail (1792-1867),[2] Major General Isaac Brockett (1798-1868) [3][4], Captain John Pritchard Post (1800-1864)[5][6], First Lieutenant Daniel Boone Post(1787-1794)[7], Second Lieutenant Augustus Howe Post(1793-1796)[8]), Drayton Welles Post(1800-)and First Sergeant Levi HennepinPost( 1800-)and are sometimes considered direct ancestors[9]. As reported by historian David Jaffe: "There is no evidence that anyone named Boone participated directly."[10] Only posthumous research has been able to verify this claim.[11],[12] On July 5th another wagon train headed east across Iowa State Penitentiary Creek Bridge over Kansas River arrived at Fort Smith with mail bearing news reports that Santa Anna had surrendered Mexico City without fighting – thus ending war between Mexico and Texas followed immediately by popular outcry against Presidencia Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Costilla y Herrera,[13],[14]" This event marking one point in history where travel documents showed that Benton County lay within modern dayArkansas; however there is no record evidence that any such activity took place within today's Van Buren community nor did any early settlers refer thereto specifically
