Van Buren is an incorporated town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Aurora metropolitan area. The town was named for General James Van Buren (1781-1845), a Ulysses S. Grant hero who served as President of the United States (1827-29 and 1840-41). The original site of the town was on the east side of Arkansas River where it joins the Mississippi River. A post office called Van Buren was established in 1836, and held until it closed in 1901. The first store in Van Buren opened its doors on July 6, 1838, and sold groceries to residents of neighboring towns such as Jonesboro and Pine Bluff. By 1850, however, most businesses had closed due to low demand from local farmers or because transportation became available only during specific times of day or when goods were available from other states at lower prices. In 1860, Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased land west of present-day Van Buren along the Arkansas River for a plantation he would call "Bury My Dead Horses". In 1865 Forrest moved his slaves to this new plantation after they won a court case challenging their ownership by General John Custer's cavalry regiment which had burned down nearby Fort Gibson four years earlier while Cavalry Brigadier General David Hunter was commanding them. Afterward many freedmen returned to live near their former plantations within walking distance of Van Buren proper but some continued to reside northeast of town on small farms until after World War II when those villagers relocated to central Little Rock so that they could maintain friendly relations with their former neighbors in what has come to be known as "theoriginalLittleRock." In 1887 three churches were erected in Van Buren with $2,000 each from contributions from citizens: First Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church), Second Methodist Church (now Trinity Lutheran Church), and Third Episcopal church (now St John's Episcopal). As denominations evolved over time new churches were built; First Baptist reopened in 1909 after being rebuilt following fire damage done by a tornado two years earlier; Third Episcopal remodeled its church building into a school before becoming an optometrist shop; Second Methodist became Park Avenue United Methodist Church before closing its doors for good in 1933; and First Presbyterian became Blakemore Chapel then finally reorganized as First Christian ReformedChurch before closure in 2003 also citing fires as causes for its fall apartness five years later). Grant's Secretary of State from 1881 to 1885 and who played an important role in helping get Grants approval for the Transcontinental Railroad through Arkansas.
