Van Buren is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the western edge of the county and has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Van Buren was founded in 1864 by James Van Buren, an American politician who served as the 35th governor of Arkansas from 1868 to 1874. In 1840, he married Nancy Jepson and they had four children: James (1846-1934), wife Sarah (1848-1925), Thomas (1851-1928) and Eleanor (1854-1945). In 1865, Van Buren became a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created Arkansas. He represented Pulaski County in that body. In 1870 he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-eighth Congress but did not serve because of his political differences with President Ulysses S. Grant over Reconstruction policies in Arkansas. After leaving Congress, he resumed farming operations until his death in 1934 at age 93 years old. The first post office in Van Buren was established on February 14, 1867; it closed on October 6, 1969 due to low mail volume. It reopened on November 12th under new name “Pulaski” after Pulaski County which Van Buren had been nominated for by congressman Cecil Culp during Reconstruction efforts in Arkansas. By 1860, the population of Van Buren had grown to around 100 people. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln appointed John A. Campbell as the first mayor of Van Buren. Van Buren was also home to one of Arkansas’s most important railroad towns during its early years. The town was located on what is now known as the Arkansas River Valley Railway. This railway facilitated trade between the eastern United States and Mexico City at a time when communication was a key factor in developing Arkansas’s economy. In 1912, Mayor Campbell died suddenly and was succeeded by his son-in-law, Harry Hendershot Waddell. Waddell served as mayor for two terms before resigning due to health problems in 1916. He was replaced by his brother-in-law Homer Ransom Goodloe Sr., who served until 1925 when he became eligible for retirement age and resigned from office again). Goodloe Jr.'s successor is generally considered to be his brother-in-law Homer Ransom Goodloe Sr.'s nephew Clyde Tomblin who served from 1927 until 1951 when he became governor of Arkansas after serving as Ulysses S. Grant's executive secretary during his presidency (1869–1877). The first white men to set foot in Van Buren, Arkansas were two brothers, John and James Polk. They arrived on July 7, 1837, while the town was still under construction. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson. The Polks built a cabin on the corner of Center and Elm Streets. The first store in Van Buren was started by Phebe Wells in 1840. A post office was established in 1848 and it remained open until 1957.
