Texarkana is a city in the United States. It is located in Stephens County, Arkansas. The population was 5,714 at the 2010 census. The name Texarkana comes from the Choctaw word "texarikan" meaning "small river." The town began as a wagon road stop on the Red River near what is now Arkadelphia and continued upriver until it reached its present location. The first settler in Texarkana was Elisha Ketchum who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Red River. A post office was established in 1840 by John Cline and named after Ketchum's brother-in-law, General James Waddell of Texas. Settlers came to Texarkana from all over Arkansas during this time period and it soon became known as one of the most important mining towns in Southwestern America because of its natural resources such as coal, silver, oil shale and gold ore. In 1848, pioneer Methodist Episcopal Reverend Thomas Foster opened a school for students in what is now downtown Texarkana which served as both a social center for settlers and an early warning system for Indian attacks on white settlement across the river. By 1870, more than 1,000 people lived in Texarkana with businesses including stores, inns and churches dotting Main Street. The discovery of oil shale aroundTexarkana dates back to 1903 when two men drilled into an area that had been overlooked by other prospectors because of its lack of petroleum content.
