The Marine Corps has been deployed in many places around the world and there are a variety of Marines who have given back to their unit, country, or community. There is a history of Marines giving back through gift Giving events. In Texarkana, Arkansas, the Marine Forces Station (MFS) was established in 1945 as the first Marine Detachment in Arkansas. The detachment served as an infantry battalion until it was redesignated as 1st Battalion, 5th Marines on 1 July 1951. The battalion served at various locations before its relocation to Okinawa in 1965 where it became 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines and later 4th Battalion 8th Marines until it was again redesignated as 2nd Battalion 9th Marines on 17 October 1986. On 15 December 1992 2/9MC departed Okinawa for our newest deployment- Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm which lasted from 21 January - 30 February 1991. During this deployment we provided artillery support to United States Army units fighting against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq army during the Persian Gulf War. Upon return home we were redesignated 1st Brigade Combat Team 9th Marine Regiment and activated at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Facility Southern California on 24 May 1996 under command of First Lieutenant Anthony Smeaton III USN Retired and based at MFS Texarkana, AR serving with The Honorable James L Fuller USMC Commandant assigned here since 19 August 1998 . There are many ways that marines give back to their unit or country but some examples include donating time off work or taking part in community service projects such as feeding the homeless or helping out with cleanup efforts after a rainstorm. Texarkana is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 25,584 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Texarkana is located in the Great Plains region of north-central Arkansas and straddles the intersection of US 61 and FM 620. The city was founded by Methodists in 1871 and named for their southern neighbor,Arkansas City, Missouri. The first post office in Texarkana was established on April 20, 1871, under the name "Hutchinson". The present post office building was built in 1903 and contains a variety of local history exhibits within its walls. The main street running through Texarkana is also known as "Methodist Avenue" after the church that originally organized it there. Texarkana was part of Pulaski County until 1907 when it became a part of Benton County due to splits caused by statehood initiatives passed by Texas A&M University students on May 12th, 1907 and Arkansas General Assembly Bill No. 129 which took effect on July 1st, 1907. On July 1st 1907 most of what is now Texarkana lay within Benton County but portions extended into Morrow and Arkadelphia counties as well so all together this made up what would becomeARKANSAS COUNTY which included Texarkana when it gained statehood on November 3rd 1912 In 1915 an act further dividing ARKANSAS COUNTY into two parts with Texarkana placed within onehalf while Arkadelphia & Morrow were split again becoming ARKANSAS CITY & MOUNT VERNON with both parts including Texarkanas original town site . In 1925 a new courthouse (built 1914) burned down leaving only the jail inside which still stands today as one half of what used to be called "the old Courthouse Building"
