The original plat included a millstream that ran through downtown Texarkana into Arkadelphia Creek which formed the border between Texas and Arkansas The town began to grow rapidly due to its location near two major rivers – both providing water for local farmers – and its easy access to transportation including wagons, trains, boats and automobiles In 1886 local businessman J P Dickey built what would become one of the most important businesses in town – Dickey's grocery store – which served as a social center for locals until it closed in 1969 Texarkana also became home to Baylor University beginning in 1907 until it moved to Houston in 1923 In 1915 local banker A C Hays donated land adjacent to Baylor University's campus which would later be used as housing for students before becoming open space In 1924 Drury Business College opened within walking distance of Baylor University while still housed on university property
