These pioneers were led by Captured Dutchman Hendrik Bechtoldt who arrived at what is nowhas an area measuring 3 square miles (8 km2). He purchased 640 acres (242 ha) which he named “Beachtondale” after himself - meaning 'the place where I bought'. Unfortunately for Captain Bechtoldt his purchase did not provide him with any fertile land so he turned his attention to finding another source of revenue by developing cattle ranches. One such rancher was JohnPritchett who began operations along present day US Highway 65 near present dayand homesteaded around 1840s [1]. Pritchett's operation grew very rapidly due to his success with raising steer and horses on these lands which he sold off at high prices to other ranch owners across the state [2]. By 1860 there were over sixtylivestock on Pritchett's property which included sixty head of beef and twenty hogs [3]. At about this same time a group of men fromFayetteville headed west on US Highway 20 towards Bentonville when they encountered Indian Chief Joseph White Thunder's bandcamping party [-4][5] . After trading goods and confusion ensued among their leader Black Hawk (Creek), some members from Fayetteville decided traveling further down the road should be their main focus while others intent on raiding party retreated back upriver[6]. A large force consisting primarilyof white men quickly killed all but one memberof White Thunder's party before emerging victorious back into civilization without any casualties whatsoever[7][8]. While subsequent investigations revealed noCIA involvement whatsoeverin this incident,[9], public opinion remains biased against Indians ever since[10][11]), nonethelessthis event has been widely regarded as one ofthe most dramatic accomplishmentsof frontier America
The town of Springdale was founded in 1892 by LDS pioneers. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 500 people. In 1916, the Springdale School District was formed and the first school opened in 1917. The present day school building was built in 1951. In 1954, the Arkansas Legislature passed an act that created a new county within the existing Mayfield County. The new county was named for General Olney Hays, who was killed during World War II. The Springdale School District became part of the new county court system and continued to serve students in local schools until 1993 when they were transferred to Mayfield County Schools.
