Sherwood, Arkansas is a small town located in Fayette County, Arkansas. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-based city of Little Rock. Sherwood is west of downtown Little Rock and east of the Arkansas River. The town was founded in 1875 by John W. Sherwood, who had come to America from England as a young man and become a farmer in nearby Monrovia. In 1876, he married Sarah Ayer and they moved to what is now Sherwood. The first school in Sherwood was built on land donated by Mrs. Ayer and it opened in December 1876. In 1907, the town received its own post office and name changed to Sherwood after John W.'s son Sherman H., who served as postmaster for 27 years until his death in 1951. The current post office building was built in 1960 and still stands today. Sherwood has two churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1901). Of particular note are two memorials dedicated to Civil War veterans: Confederate Cemetery (dedicated 1909) and Soldiers' National Cemetery (dedicated 1935). North Main Street also contains several businesses including a gas station/convenience store, bakery, hair salon, grocery store, mechanic shop, bank branch and four antique shops; one being open only during events such as Fourth of July fireworks displays or Renaissance Fair Days . There are also several small parks located throughout the town including one that features an outdoor swimming pool which opened in 2004 One notable feature of the community is its annual Peach Festival which takes place over three days late summer Each year more than 1 million people attend event that includes nearly 400 vendors

The first school in Sherwood opened in 1837 and remained open until 1942 when it was replaced by a junior high school. In 1907, a sawmill was built on the creek that forms Sherwood's main street. The mill continued to be used for many years until it became inactive in 2002. In 2007, an effort to convert it into a museum began with donations from local citizens. When completed, the museum will feature exhibits about local history and culture as well as current events in the community.
