The marines deployed in Sherwood, Arkansas in 1961 were a part of the famed 1st Marine Division. The division was first activated on December 8th, 1941 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and fought its way through World War II. After the war, the division was stationed in Okinawa before moving to Japan. In 1951, they were sent to Korea and fought in combat against the Chinese Nationalist forces. After the Korean War ended, they returned to United States soil and were assigned to Headquarters Marines in Quantico before being reassigned to Hawaii in 1957. They served as an amphibious assault force during the Vietnam War and eventually left for home in 1971.
Sherwood, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Port Clinton, AR Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by white men who moved from Illinois to start a cattle ranch there. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1903, the name of the town was changed to Sherwood after a Mr. Sherwood (1859-1925), one of the first settlers in that area and a charter member of the Arkansas State Bank. Mr. Sherwood donated land for the original park in downtown Sherwood which now includes a library, restaurant and movie theater complex called "The Park". As early as 1907, citizens had been petitioning for approval to build an electric street light over US Highway 45 just east of town limits; this request was granted on October 15 that year by then-Governor Orval Faubus (D). The current Sylvania Avenue intersection where US Highway 45 meets SR 9 took its present form when itwas built about two miles south of its present location due east of what is now Sherwood Academy Drive/SR 801 on what were once part of Mr.Sherwoods property along Sylvania Avenue; shortly thereafter, other streets following SR 9 were also built with this alignment including parts of what are now Main Street/McDonald Boulevard and Center Street/Business Boulevard today before rejoining SR 9 at their present routes near business entrances into town later today #2 School District No: 308 On January 24th 1912 – less than three months afterSherwoods incorporation as a town – aerial photos show construction underway on what became known as "Old State Capitol" off Elmendorf Road just west ofpresent day Springfield Drive; according to historical records & oral traditions some 100 or more men actively workedfor approximately 4 years erecting both brick walls (& many other structures) exterior & interior primarily using local lumber butternut tree limbs supplied by local farmer W H Bowen . Work stopped abruptly about 3 weeks prior to official dedication due excessive snowfall during winter season resultingin power outages throughout entire county @ $900 per hour when work resumed “ Old State Capitol” remained unoccupied until recently when Majestic Theatre Complex opened adjacent thereto

Sherwood was a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, located on the banks of the Little River. The community was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from Jonesboro, Arkansas. The name Sherwood derived from the Shawnee word "shirka," meaning "happy." The first post office in Sherwood was established in 1883. In 1907, the community had a population of 100 and a school that served grades K-12. In 1916, the United States Post Office building was dedicated and served as headquarters for the Pulaski County Courthouse until it burned down in 1984. In 1936, Sherwood had a population of 300 and two businesses: a general store and an agricultural implement dealership. By 1941, there were only 20 residents remaining and one business: a gas station. During World War II, Sherwood produced munitions for General Motors. In 1951,Sherwood had a population of 350 and three businesses: an auto dealership, a restaurant and an ammunition store. Two years later, all three businesses closed because of economic decline; however, one business reopened in 1957: an auto dealership operated by Earle Hargrave which became known as Hargrave's Garage until it closed in 1993. In 1969-1970 when Pulaski County underwent redevelopment efforts due to suburbanization within its boundaries (see Redevelopment Efforts within Pulaski County), Sherwood experienced heavy industrial development due to its proximity to Ford Field on I-55; this led to significant loss of jobs for local residents during this time period Additionally housing developments began popping up throughout rural Arkansas which affected both Job Corps programs that used Sherwoods graduates as apprenticeship workers while also displacing many local families with no other choice but to leave their homes behind However during this time some civic organizations such as Carpenters Local 375 acted as boosters for new businesses ensuing growth around town while preserving much of its fabric
Sherwood was founded in 1839 by John and Jane Sherwood. The town started as a small village, but soon grew into a larger community with a post office, school, churches, and stores. In the late 1800s, Sherwood became an important cotton center due to its location on the Arkansas River. Sherwood's economy shifted during the Great Depression when many of the town's residents lost their jobs. However, during World War II,Sherwood played an important role in the war effort by providing materials and services to military installations in Arkansas and Texas.
