Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 961 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Facebook City, which had a population of 2,687 as of the 2010 census. Sherwood was founded by pioneers in 1839. It became a post office in 1848 and a village in 1856. The community name comes from nearby Mount Holly, where three men named Sherwood built homes for themselves and their families in 1836-37. They were motivated to do so because they believed that Mount Holly would be an ideal place to conduct trade with surrounding towns and counties. The first school opened in Sherwood on February 22, 1840. In 1861, the village had a population of 230 people and it became an incorporated town on December 20 of that year. The Four Corners Railroad arrived in 1862 and quickly brought settlers here; before long, Sherwood boasted over 100 residents. Development slowed down after the American Civil War began but resumed after Reconstruction ended in 1865; by 1880, however, only about 50 people lived here permanently due to various factors including railroad competition and land values soaring during the late 1800s boom times." O Pioneers! Sherwood was founded in 1865 by men from the town of Clarksville, Arkansas. The town was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, an early settler in what is now Arkansas. During the American Civil War, Forrest served as a general in the Confederate army and was known for his brutal tactics. After the war, he moved to Arkansas and began developing the land that would become Sherwood. In 1868, he founded the first school in what is now Sherwood. The following year, he built a sawmill and store on the current site of his business. In 1872, he married Anna Belle Throckmorton and soon started growing his own crops and raising livestock. He also developed a reputation as a good teacher and contributed significantly to Sherwood's development as a small town. In addition to his businesses, Forrest also served as mayor twice and was involved in many philanthropic projects throughout his life. In 1917, he died at age 94 years old but remains an important figure in Sherwood's history today.
