It is located on the eastern edge of Pulaski County and is bordered by the towns of Rogers City to the south, Little Rock to the east, and Salem to the north. The Sherwood community began as a post office in 1881. A sawmill and grist mill were built there in 1886 and 1907, respectively. The community name was derived from nearby Woodruff Mountain or "Sherwood Hills." In 1912, a fire destroyed much of what remained of the Sawmill District; however, another sawmill was built soon after. A grocery store and gas station were opened in 1959; they are still operational today. A new elementary school was built in 1984; it is now known as Park Elementary School. A large cotton gin closed down in 1997 but has been restored and is currently used as an agricultural museum. In 2006,Arkansas legislators passed a bill that would have renamed Sherwood after civil rights leader Reva Davis King (1925-2009). However, this bill died before being put into effect due to lack of support from within Arkansas's Republican Party hierarchy.

A major development that took place during the early 21st century occurred with the opening of Interstate 20 near Sherwood. This caused significant growth for the town as motorists began to departure from its boundaries towards North Little Rock and other larger cities nearby. As a result, commercial activity declined somewhat withinSherwood over time; however, it has rebounded somewhat since then thanks to increased visitation by tourists and locals alike!
