The name comes from an old Indian word meaning "forest". The first settlers in what is now Sherwood were farmers and their families who arrived around 1871. They cleared land and built homes near present day Sherman Avenue and State Highway 9. The community began to prosper when the railroad came through in the early 1900s. Sherwood, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. Sherwood was founded in 1907 and named for Colonel John Sherman Sherwood. The population of the town was 573 at the 2010 census. The first three stores that operated in Sherwood were all post office boxes from the early 1900s. In 1906, the first school opened in Sherwood and was named after Mrs. Smith who donated land to build it. The first teacher taught classes in a classroom inside of a old house on Third Street until 1912 when a new building was constructed on Second Avenue which served as the School District's Headquarters until 1955 when it moved to its current location on Main Street. In 1915, local farmers formed a cooperative to produce Agricultural Lumber and sell it to other towns in neighboring counties. This business lasted until 1922 when it changed hands multiple times before being sold to Joplin-based lumber company Westinghouse Brothers Limited Partnership for $2 million dollars. After World War II ended, many residents leftSherwood for various reasons including industry downsizing and an increase in crime rates throughout Arkansas during the postwar period known as "The Dark Ages". Many of these people returned over time but some never did because they found other opportunities more promising or because they chose not to leaveihuselong term due to political or social upheaval within their home state or country following World War II which created allotment of refugees across America called The Great Migration which impacted sherwood's demographics heavily overall with many leaving for good reasons such as better opportunities overseas or finding work closer to family back home during this difficult time period according to historian David Kappelman who wrote about "The American South Since World War II" published by Oxford University Press in 2003 ISBN 9780198643052).
