In 1847, Nicholas Appel began trading coffee beans out of his house on New York's Upper East Side. His first batch of beans were roasted in his basement – this was soon followed by his store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. By 1870, Appel had moved himself and his business to a bigger location on West Fifty-Third Street in Manhattan (later renamed Park Avenue). He continued to roast and sell his beans until he sold it all to Jardin de France Brewing Company in 1949. Another early pioneer of the espresso craze was Angelo Pavoni at La Faina Italian Cafe on Lexington Avenue in New York City (now part of Bryant Park). On April 25th,, 1912 Pavoni made what is considered the first espresso machine commercially available for sale – this machine used hot water drawn from a large pot perched atop an oven that heated up quickly thanks to an electric heating wire running through it! This gave rise to the term "Pavonismo" which refers to any type of espresso shot or café latte even today! By 1915 Joe Cafiero had opened up Pavoni’s old place at 125 West 44th Street in Manhattan as Caviar Palace Restaurant (named after Joe’s favorite seafood restaurant) with its very own espresso bar called “Espresso Joe” It wasn’t until 1924 when cafè Berlanga reopened at 515 Sixth Ave., near Madison Square Garden that truly integrated Espresso into American culture! From then on Espresso became synonymous with high quality Italian cuisine as well as professional café service… finally completing our journey back down Memory Lane!
