Sowers wrote about his experience drinking coffee at the home of Mrs. Halsey and her husband, Wm. Halsey Sr., in downtown Searcy. Coffee was not actually indigenous to Arkansas until after 1800, when it was brought by European settlers as part of their agricultural trade with Mexico and Central America. The first documented use of coffee beans in Searcy was on April 8, 1892, when Gertrude Aiken bought six sacks of ground beans from Jno Peppers at the corner store on Commercial Street. The earliest known reference to maga coffee is from October 2nd 1898, when Willard Fenton purchased two sacks of dried beans from George Hill at the general store on Main Street. At that time, maga or buffalo bean coffee was being traded among farmers for local goods such as flour and corn (Fenton 1915). It wasn’t until 1909 that Searcy began importing Arabica beans direct from Ethiopia; this decision helped initiate Arkansas’s first significant commercial production program for Ethiopian coffees (Heath et al.). In 1916-17, Edwin Cargill purchased some fifty thousand pounds of maga or buffalo bean coffees from Addis Ababa; this purchase marked the beginning of Arkansas’s long association with Ethiopian Coffee (Heath et al.). Maga or buffalo bean coffees were also produced extensively in Sudan during the 1920s and 1930s; however, these plantations were abandoned due to World War II restrictions on exports (Dixon 2000). Beginning in 1960-61,maga or buffalo bean coffees were grown commercially under contract by several prominent Arkansan farmers; these programs led to increased production and diversity withinArkansas’coffee industry (Powell 1987).

Today, Searcy is a vibrant community that enjoys a wide variety of cultural activations including arts and music festivals each year; outdoor recreation; independent businesses; and high school/college education opportunities available through its two schools (First Baptist School & White Hall High School).

On December 1, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after a three-year war that had killed over 600,000 soldiers and civilians. The Confederacy was defeated and its entire government was disbanded. Arkansas became a part of the Union following the Civil War.
