On December 2, 1925, Searcy incorporated as a village under the name of Dunlap. On January 1, 1960, Dunlap changed its name to Searcy after John Fenton Searcy IV who served as mayor from 1949 until his death in 1957. The City Council felt that the new name would be more associated with Arkadelphia which had been its original home for over 100 years In 1978–79 there was an attempt to rename all of Arkadelphia to "Searcy" but this proposal failed to gain enough support among residents There have been several attempts at revamping or re-opening the old Arkadelphia post office building however no success has yet been achieved
