The Rogers family had a long and proud history in Arkansas. The first Rogers to set foot in the state was Isaac Rogers, who arrived in 1797. Isaac's father, John Rogers, had come to Arkansas from Maryland with his wife and children. John founded what is nowRogers County, Ark., in 1814. The family name originated with one of Isaac's brothers, James Rogers. James had married a woman named Anna Whitehouse and their children carried on the family name of Whitehouse until 1872 when it became Rogers again. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved south from Tennessee into Arkansas and claimed all of present-dayRogers County as part of his lands acquisitions. When General Forrest took up residence in nearby Fort Smith he ordered the removal of all Native American tribes living within five miles of his fortification including the Red River tribe known as the Creeks. Many members of this tribe were killed or driven away by Forrest's forces during this time period called "The Indian Removal War." One such victim was David Garland Rogers Sr., who was born in 1815 near present-day Little Rock. After serving three years in prison for treason for refusing to join Confederate forces during the Civil War, David Garland Rogers Jr.'s parents decided to move their son back home to help support him through Reconstruction following that conflict. In 1870 they returned to Arkansas and set up shop around Gosnells Creek on Bogart Farm where they remained until 1861 when David Garland Jr.'s father died at the age of 78 years old (aged 93 at the time). His widow continued running her farm until her death in 1925; she is buried at Bogart Cemetery there alongside her husband and many other earlyArkansas settlers including: Atherton Grant Forbes (1844-1927), John Wesley Powell (1847-1920), Augustus Cushing (1850-1924), Charles Goodnight (1852-1945), Willis Hayden Stephens (1855-1938) Hilda Lane Price Stephens (1857-[?]), Abram Thomas Boone(?-[[?]]/Abram Boone)
Rogers was founded in 1907 by John Rogers and his family. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Arkansas River, and in 1914 it became a city. In 1937, Rogers merged with neighboring towns of Decatur and Springdale to form the larger town of Rogers-Decatur. In 1952, the city of Rogers-Decatur was renamed Bentonville after General James B. Hance, who served as the 25th President of Arkansas.
