Rogers, Arkansas was founded on November 12, 1881 by James A. Rogers and his family. The town was named after James A. Rogers’ father, who had come to the area in 1858 from Mobile County, Alabama. In 1876, the Rogerses moved to what is now Rogersville and began a home-based farming operation that would last for over 60 years. In 1907, the Central Arkansas Telephone Company was organized in Rogersville. This company provided telephone service to various rural hamlets throughout central Arkansas until it merged with Western Union in 1964. One of the first businesses in Rogersville was the Wagon Wheel Restaurant which opened in 1915. The restaurant continued to serve up its traditional menu until it closed its doors in 2001. Rogersville also served as a primary center for cotton production until around the mid-19th century when mechanization replaced many of the traditional methods used to cultivate this crop such as picking Cottonseed manually using a hand crank harvester or driving bales of cotton down a small gradient into deeper soil at high speed using an electric buggy; these machines were later replaced by mechanical duplexing equipment which eliminated most of the Illington–Farmington–Fayette lineage field work necessary for productive cotton production).
