Pine Bluff, Arkansas is located in the Ozarks region of Arkansas. The town was founded in 1881 by John P. Hargrave and others who came from Bellefontaine, Kentucky. The first post office in Pine Bluff was established in 1883. The name of the town comes from a small tree that grows near the courthouse square. In 1911, pine trees were planted on Main Street to commemorate General Ulysses S. Grant's visit to Pine Bluff that year. In 1928, a new high school was built and named for Judge Augustus Minton Woodbury Sr., who had been an important figure in Arkansas politics during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1951, Pine Bluff became the home of United States Air Force Base Thunderbolt which provides aerial refueling support for Operation Desert Storm I and II; it also housed two major libraries before it closed in 1993. Since then, many development projects have taken place in downtown Pine Bluff including several restaurants and nightlife options as well as a number of businesses related to health care and technology companies. Today, downtown is one of the most vibrant areas of town with numerous stores, restaurants, bars and nightclubs; as well as more than one dozen housing units available for rent or purchase within walking distance of both local business districts (the Old Town district) and primary schools (). Pine Bluff, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-springdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first documented mention of Pine Bluff was in 1811 when Captain David Porter and his men called it "Pine-town". The first permanent settler in what is now Pine Bluff was James Dickey who built a cabin on the bluffs overlooking the Arkansas River in 1820. He named his land "Dickey'S Prairie" after his father's farm near Georgetown, Kentucky where he had been born. In 1849, Major General Nathaniel Lyon moved from Memphis to Fort Sumter to take command of all Confederate forces east of the Mississippi River. He decided that Pine Bluff would be one of his headquarters and ordered Colonel Hennepin to build him a house there. Colonel Hennepin did so and named it "Hennepin's Palace" after himself and General Lyon met here on October 8, 1849. In 1861, Union General Ulysses S. Grant advanced north from Corinth through central Mississippi Territory towards Mobile Bay with an army including 5,000 Confederate soldiers under Generals John Custer andStephen Foster surrounding him on three sides. On December 31st Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Grant's army at Battle Creek Bridge over the Tennessee River near Nashville without any warning or engagement; this attack caused great Royal American casualties which doomed Union prospects for success against Confederates more generally than Battle Creek Bridge alone would have done. On January 6th 1865 during skirmish around Coldwater Springs near present day Springdale (not far from where Pine Bluff now stands), Confederate Brigadier General Forrest engaged Union Army Lieutenant John Giddings while Forrest himself was hit by a musketball while rideing behind Forrest’s horse; this event inspired American Lt Giddings to desert with his unit leading upriver to join Sherman’s march into Chattanooga two weeks later). Some time before Christmas 1865 Stillman garrisoned at Fort Pillow surrendered unconditionally to Sherman despite heavy resistance withdrawing into Chattahoochee Valley; some sources say Stillman offered unconditional surrender rather than face possible execution as advocated by Ulysses S Grant due to increasing reports that he had been conspiring with Hood’s rebels against their general commanding United States troops west of Chickamauga Dam Road outside Chattanooga During Reconstruction following the Civil War most white Arkansans relocated eastward dalmatian style (the only other place such resettlement occurred in US history was West Virginia duringReconstruction) Pining for new homes saw many families move out onto high ground between Big Sandy Lake and White Sands Lake forming today's northwest edge of town limits . Many structures still standing are associated with these early settlers: Presbyterian Church (built 1840), Masonic Lodge #2 (1841), Post Office (1846), First Baptist Church (1850), Bank & Trust Company Building (1854).
