In 1853, John Hudgin purchased land east of town and began growing crops and raising hogs. By 1870, he had built a large home on the site that still stands today.His wife Anna also founded the first school in Mountain Home in 1873. Over time, many other pioneer families moved into the town and throughout its history there were more than 20 churches, schools and businesses. In 1952, John Hudgin's grandson Michael opened The Gun Shop at 4609 S State Line Road which became one of the most popular local gun stores in Mountain Home. It was here that Michael Sellers sold his first rifle - an American military M1 Garand - to Bob Etheridge for $475. The store continued to operate until it closed in 1984. Today, The Gun Shop remains a part of the community memory as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gun Shop's legacy has been carried on by Michael Sellers' son-in-law Rick Sellers who operates Rick's Guns & Ammo located at 5251 N Main Street in Mountain Home from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday and 9:00am to 4:30pm on Sundays. The first post office in Mountain Home was established on December 22, 1881, and mail was delivered to the town by horse and buggy. In 1911, Mountain Home had a population of 586 people. The first school in Mountain Home opened in 1895 and was known as the "Blacksmith School". In 1927, the name of the school changed to Mountain Home High School after it became a co-educational institution. In 1960, construction began on what would become Mountain Home Elementary School.
