Maumelle, Arkansas is a small town located in Maumelle County, Arkansas. The population was 1,970 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Maumelle County. The name "Maumelle" is from French and means "hollow place." The community began as a post office in 1881, and soon became known for its flour millinery and other agricultural products. In 1906, the first electric lights were installed in the community. By 1959, the flour mill had been closed and most of the production had ceased. However, since then, several new businesses have opened up in Maumelle including a tire store and an RV dealership. In recent years there has been considerable development around the local high school which offers both traditional public education for students throughout grades 9-12 as well as more specialized programs such as technical/trade training for adults or young people who want to enter into careers in various fields after high school. Additionally, there are several clubs active within the community which offer variety of activities such as music concerts etc., making it one of the most vibrant towns in northwest Arkansas.

Maumelle was founded in 1867 by John W. Maumelle and his wife Anna. It became a town in 1907 after the neighboring town of Pine Bluff merged with it. The Maumelle & Pine Bluff Railroad ran through the town from 1892 to 1957. The railroad was abandoned in 1957, but its tracks remain buried under city streets and yards to this day. The first post office in Maumelle was established on May 4, 1867, by John W. Maumelle and his wife Anna. The name of the post office was changed to Maumelle on October 15, 1868, due to the word "mauma" being too long for a mail stamped envelope (the letter "a" is not common enough among Arkansas postal letters). The first store in Maumelle opened on December 1, 1868, by J.W. and A.M. Whitehead Jr.. The store closed on July 14, 1870 because of financial difficulties caused by the Panic of 1870-71 which struck the United States at that time hard financially (although not as hard as during later years). A new store opened on May 16, 1893 by Hennepin County merchant Ebenezer Fenton with assistance from local citizens Jno Dickson and Solomon Weems Sr.. This store continued operation until it burned down on December 5th of that year due to an incorrect diagnosis from fire starter Alfred Crouch about possible sparks coming from a burning piece of wood inside; no sparks were found! After this tragedy occurred one may remember when residents would go out into their front yards late at night to light small fires just for fun because they could do so without fear of getting caught or sued! Though an amusing memory now days there is still something special about these nights!! The first school in Maumelle began operations on February 6th of that year by Mrsusia Dunham with four students attending morning classes while Mrsusia worked afternoons as a domestic servant for her son Thos Purdy [Purdy later served as Mayor of downtown Mummellee] - lessons were taught sign language then! Classes continued until September 9th1893 when Mrsusia gave birth to her second child which increased teacher workloads so instruction ended early for that term also! For many years following this initial foray into education our children attended “an old white woman’s school” located near Center Street – where we still sat today across from Verizon Wireless Arena waiting their turn…. however recent budget cuts have resulted us moving back closer to home rather than allow our aging infrastructure (mainly water mains) to deterioration any further…. sorry kids! As you can see we are well aware what has been going on here at home since before your very eyes….. In addition since 1993 our children have also enjoyed learning how much fun internet can be!!! Unfortunately like most things good/bad come along with it’s own setback – our current building will soon be unable to meet all future needs even though planning has already started……Back To History Now!!!!!
Maumelle was founded in 1875 by settlers from Illinois. The town was named for John Maumelle, a United States Representative from Arkansas. The town's first store opened in 1876. It became an important center for cotton production in the early 20th century and was home to several banks, churches, and businesses. In the 1920s, Maumelle experienced some growth due to its proximity to Little Rock and its role as a center for shipping goods between Little Rock and other states. However, the town's fortunes began to decline after World War II because of competition from neighboring towns with larger populations. In the 1970s, progress was made in revitalizing Maumelle when new businesses were established and redevelopment projects began landline phone service, grocery stores, recreational opportunities such as swimming and fishing, and more public works projects. Today, Maumelle is an important community with a rich history that continues to grow
