Marion, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Port Huron, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by Irish immigrants and named for General James H. Marion who served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The present day community of Marion was platted on November 1, 1887 by J.W. Thornton and Wm Fenton with a land grant from President Harrison to John Akins as an incentive for him to build a railroad through that area. The first post office in Marion opened on December 10, 1888. The community grew rapidly due to its location near the new rail line and its easy accessibility by wagon or horseback ride to other towns in Pulaski County. By 1900, there were over 100 residents living in Mariontown and it had become one of the most important commercial centers in rural Arkansas. One of the earliest industrialists in Marion was Elisha Swartzell who built a lumberyard and garage early on in its history while also becoming involved with banking and real estate interests; he helped establish what is now known as First National Bank of Marion (now part of Wells Fargo) which opened its doors on Main Street on October 20th, 1902 under auspices of then-Governor Orval Faubus. In 1906, when Arkansas became a state and independent from Missouri, Marion became one of several municipalities within Pulaski County newly incorporated into the state including Arkadelphia (named for then-Governor Daniel Boone), Fort Smith (named for Confederate General Robert Ewing), Jonesboro (named after Confederate States Senator David Dixon), West Memphis (named after Confederate General Tishomingo Scott), White Sands (initially called Iron Mountain because of its rich natural resources) and finally Marshalltown (nicknamed “Dixie” because many white settlers brought their families there). After years of growth resulting from increased trade with nearby states such as Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls due to new transportation routes opening up during World War I,[citation needed] jobs began disappearing as production shifted away from agriculture towards munitions manufacturing[1] following America's entry into World War II.[2] However, local businesses never gave up hope that they would be able to survive despite difficult times; through hard work, resilience and dedication they still operate today albeit informally under different names throughout much of central Arkansas thanks to friends & family support!
