National Guard gifts have been a part of the history of Marion, Arkansas for many years. The National Guard was activated in 1903 and has played a role in the community since then. The first gift from the National Guard was a rifle to Mr. J.F. Crouch of Marion. This rifle is still in use today and is proudly displayed at the arsenal in downtown Marion. In 1916, a group of soldiers from nearby Fort Smith donated money to buy two rifles for the Marion National Guard Arsenal. These rifles were used by both the Army and local law enforcement as backup weapons during World War I. The generosity of these soldiers continues to be appreciated today, with each donation providing important equipment for our military and law enforcement personnel alike! In 1919, another donation was made when Private Harry Fenton gave $250 toward purchase of four shotguns for use by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department. These shotguns are currently stored at the county archives along with other historical items related to this area’s history! Throughout its history, the National Guard has always been supportive of local communities in which it has played an essential role! This support can be seen through donations such as Funds For Local Defense (FFLD), which helps fund local police agencies’ missions and programs; Uniformed Services Day Parade Fund (UDF), which provides funds towards uniforms or othergear needed for parade traditions; and Veterans Day Committee Donation (VVC), which helps provide scholarships or financial assistance to veteran-owned businesses or organizations in need! Marion, Arkansas was an unincorporated community in Pulaski County, Arkansas, located on the east side of the Arkansas River. It was founded by settlers from Illinois in 1873. The population was 10 at the time of its founding. The railroad arrived in Marion in 1886 and it became a small town with a post office, grocery store, and school. A sawmill and grist mill were built around 1907 and 1909, respectively. The town experienced rapid growth during World War I as thousands of soldiers passed through Marion to fight in Europe. The war ended with the armistice and the population plummeted back to 10 people by 1921; however, growth resumed after World War II because of new development along the river.
The city of Marion, Arkansas was founded in 1881 when the railroad arrived to town. The site of present-day Marion had been a part of what was then called Indian Territory. The railroad brought settlers and businesses to town, and by 1886, Marion had a population of about 100 people. The first school in town was built on the current site of the city hall in 1889. In 1896, the Arkansas Legislature designated Marion as a census-designated place (CDP). That same year, the first street in town was named after Representative John Fenton (D-Arkansas), who represented the area at that time. In 1907, the City Council voted to rename themselves "Marion" for Representative J.Fenton. In 1912, local farmers organized a graingrower's association to improve crop production and protect their land from competing interests. This group became known as The Merchants Association of Marion before becoming The Florence Grain Exchange in 1922 when that organization merged with another village near Marion - Florence - creating one large grain exchange with several smaller ones throughout Arkansas. When World War II began, many Arkansans volunteered for military service or worked on war plants; however, not all residents joined up because they were eager for combat work or financial gain; some simply felt an oath taken during wartime signified their commitment to country and chose not to leave home without completing it. After World War II ended, many veterans returned home and resumed civilian lives; however, others decided to stay behind because they wanted property or money settlement options available once their skills were exhausted from military service or industry jobs didn't materialize following reconstruction efforts after the war ended. In 1951, Congress passed legislation designating Marion as an emergency DMA so that newlywed couple Royce Cunningham and Beolee Easley could purchase 4 acres along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard for $1 per acre due them immediately upon marriage even though no deed ever existed between them! They moved into their new home on this land within 2 years; this is considered one of THE earliest homeownership communities in America! As more families moved into these areas throughout America during this time period there were increased calls for government assistance such as low interest rates accessible through Community Development Financial Institutions program which helped these individuals acquire homes without having any extra cash flow available just like today's HUD programs!
