After one day of battle, Union forces had driven back Forrest's force and captured more than 600 prisoners. Following the Civil War, Marion reverted back to local control and saw little activity until around 1880 when several stores were established along Main Street that functioned primarily as grocery stores catering to soldiers stationed nearby at Fort Smith (later renamed Little Rock).
