In 1916, Marion Shipbuilding Corporation merged with two other companies, American Mariner Lines and National Harvester Co., to form the United States Maritime Commission (USMC). The USMC purchased many shipyards across America, including those in Marion County. This allowed the company to continue building ships until World War II when it went out of business.
Marion, Arkansas is a small town in the northeast corner of Arkansas. The population was 4,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of Little Rock-North Little Rock-East Little Rock-South Little Rock micropolitan area. The first white person to live in Marion was George Dickey, who came overland from Kentucky in 1819. Dickey married a woman from Texas and settled there in 1825. In 1832, he bought land east of what is now Marion and built a cabin which he called "Dickey's Cabin". He later sold his land to James Buckley for $4,000 ($106 per acre). In 1846, Isaac Newton opened the first store in Marion. At that time the only transportation available to the town was wagon roads and horseback transportation supplemented by occasional boat trips on the Arkansas River. After new railroads were built through central Arkansas during the 1850s and 1860s, travel within Marion became easier and more widespread. By 1870, there were nine stores and two schools in town; four churches; one jail; two wells; three plantations; five families lived here permanently or for several years; one family moved out after their farm failed due to drought conditions.; At this point, it seemed as if Marion would never experience any significant growth until World War I when gasoline became available for cars and trucks throughout most of United States

Despite these challenges, however, Marion continued to grow until World War II when it lost much of its manufacturing industry due to shortages caused by wartime production demands. Today, many residents still identify with their hometown as they enjoy spending time at local businesses such as Fayetteville's Marriott Hotel or White Sands Resort & Casino which are located within easy walking distance of most residents' homes.
